Here is my 9 year old daughters gobbler. It's her 2nd bird, having taken one in KS last year. 9 1/2" beard, hair over 1" spurs. He made a B-line to the Dave Smith jake! Awesome hunt!!! Shot right at 10 yds with Rossi Trifecta 20 gauge and 6 shot.

My nephew killed one almost the same size except his had a 9 inch beard in IL youth yesterday. We were using the same dsd jake decoy and had 4 come right to it. They are great decoys. Congratulations to your daughter.

Thats awesome! Glad to see some parents know how to raise them right!

I too am wondering about the 20 guage. My 8 year old daughter wants to hunt bad, but smallest gun I have is a 20g. I have considered getting her a 410 because I am not sure if she could handle the 20.

Good Going sceptic, cant wait till my little girl is big enough. In the mean time i try to find any kid willing even if i have to purchase the tag for the to be able to go. Nothing as rewarding.

410 on turkey may be a little undergunned past 10-15 yards. A good light load for them to practice with and slip in that turkey load before the hunt and your golden. So many great adjustable and affordable youth guns out now days that can FIT the kid. In my youth i got the adult gun and tried to make it work, dad even cut the stock off one so it would fit now its a matter of pushing a button to change stock length.

The hunt was awesome! Before daylight we had 6 or 8 Gobblers going at it. All got silent when they hit the ground and it was about an hour before we seen any. When we did I was able to call a nice gobbler about 700 yds across the field but he would not come in past 100 yds. He came and went a couple times but would not commit. A little while later this guy showed up after a little calling and made a b-line for the jake decoy. The DS jake did suffer a little damage from the 6 shot but I told her before hand to shoot when she was comfortable and ready and it just happened that he paused right in front of the decoy..LOL. Well worth it!

To answer a couple questions. It was in Marion County. The 20 gauge she started shooting when she was 8. She likes shooting her .243 but the 20 is too light and kicked a bit much for last season. Our practice sessions were and are limited to 1 shot, then wait about 20 minutes and shoot again, and that is it for the day. We keep it inside 20 yds. When hunting, she does not notice any recoil at all.

Thanks for all the comments! She was super excited...as was I!!!:D

Way to go E!!!! I am planning on taking Josh this weekend for the OK youth season. So heads up Okie guys youth season is Sat and Sun the 2-3. He shoots a youth model 870 20ga with pheasant #4 load and we are gonna keep it under 20. He has been shooting skoal cans and spray can lids with no issues. He is 7 and pretty thin so not alot of padding and has no problem shooting two or three rounds at a time. Hope I can post up some pics this weekend and we will be using the DSD jake and upright hen as well.
