I have been shooting AMS reels for 20 years and I still love them. Just got a new one too. I can't say enough about them. Put it on your bow so you can reach the trigger with ease. When you first get to the water, toss your arrow out into the water to pre wet your line. Now you are ready to bowfish! They are just so simple and dependable. Use your line clip, life will be better.
AMS changed the way we bowfish with the invention of the Retreivor reel, it becomes so natural to shoot that it is like second nature after a bit. It is well worth the money and they seem to out last everything else I have seen and tried. All parts are replaceable but there is very little maitence required.
You can upgrade it with a quick disconect mount and or a AMS sight.
Recipie, take one AMS reel, A Muzzy arrow, add fish, have fun!!

PS. I am on the AMS pro staff
I bowfish, therfore I am.

I bought one used, off the internet. But it's differant from the AMS I been using! When I reel it in, the string keeps coming out the slot on the side, and getting jambed up! The one I bought last year is solid on the side, so that never was a problem. I'm thinking this is a AMS Retreiver made for a float system??? Why else is it slotted on the side. My friends have Retreivers and they have solid sides like the one I bought last year. Any way possible to convert the one I just bought?? Sure is a pain when the line gets caught in that open slot!!!!!!!!! THANKS!

You have the Slotted reel made for the float system. You can tape over the slot if you like. To learn about the slotted reel, buy the AMS video REEL BOWFISHING, it is a great video and has tips on the reels, arrows, knots and the slotted reel.

all the best, hitech :shade:

Geesh HiTech,....thought you would have come up with a better answer than "a peice of tape"! Especially with a name like "HiTech",...and being a "Pro Staffer" and all! Just how long do you think a "peice of tape" is going to stick on an uneven surface and being around water and such??? Guess I should have known better than to ask......
And yes, I WILL run right out and "buy the video",......Pffffffff

Even in archery, a peice of duct tape is still king !!
Sometimes its ok to just keep it simple.

Now would you like a better answer? Ok, here it is-the slotted reel cost more than the standard so it stands to reason that you should be able to trade someone straight up for a reel that is more to your liking, and needs not tape. :)

PS. The tape trick mentioned above, is not in the video.

The retrievers are well worth the money. I've used one since I started and it has worked great. I went out and bought another one a couple days ago, so we can use the old one as a spare. I don't know how much you spent, but I picked mine up at the local store for $50 with the 130# line on it.

I got it for 60 from gander mountain. I have no idea the weight of the line, it didnt say? We used to ghetto rig it before this year. A spinning reel with 60 pound braided musky line lol. Still shot a ton. Only have to wait till the 15th i can't wait! They are stacked up like crazy in the river.
