Liz and I got in to CS around two and took a shuttle to the Center with John Magera (Limbwalker), Coach Lee and PSE's Alexander Krillov. 27 or so years ago I was here for one of the very first extended training sessions as a skeet shooter and Liz and I are in the same dorm I was in there. Other than those buildings, nothing is really the same. The program starts with dinner at 6 and then a two hour presentation tonight. Will update tomorrow if I have time

Last night Tom Parrish was the MC. Everyone introduced themselves-some of the notables included Dr. Staten Holmes and three time world champion Rick McKinney. JIm Pruitt of AT is here as well. The main thrust of the discussion was the fact that while US scores have remained stagnant in the last several worlds, other countries have improved their scores. This morning we have some guest speakers which I will try to touch on later. I am actually staying in the same dorm I did as a skeet shooting summer RA many many years ago.

Hi Jim: Thanks. Enjoy staying in the old room. Must bring back lots of memories.

Wish I could have made it to this one, but my daughter is getting married at end of month and need to save for that.

This morning's sessions featured Tom Parrish speaking of the importance of a training plan. Facts demonstrate that athletes who have a defined set of goals are going to progress faster than those who do not. Level IV Gary Holstein explained the "Dart-Fish" computer software video analysis. Next up were two PHD's from the USOC- the first presentation was on feedback to the archers and the second was on various analysis techniques featurings some neat pictures of GUy Krueger hooked up to some electronics to measure muscle use etc. This afternoon its Coach Lee

Last night's session involved lots of stretchy band work and viewing a couple of the matchers for the 04 games involving Coach Lee's student Tim Cuddihy of Australia as he beat two top koreans back to back Tom Barker's daughter is one of the speakers this morning

today's session started out with Tom B's lovely daughter-a sports therapist and archery coach doing a very useful seminar on archery related exercises and muscle groups. We then had a bit more Tom Parrish and Lots of Coach Lee. Then off to the gym with the infamous stretchy bands trying to get the best system down. Fortunately, Rick McKinney (three time world target champion and head of Carbon Tech arrows) and Dr Staten Holmes (as nice a guy you could ever hope to meet and a world class archer as well) along with Limbwalker and Judo Olympian now archer Angelo Ruiz were there to help. Then we had individual tests as well. All in all a great weekend, not just due to the material but the many interesting fellow coaches I met.

Chelsea called tonight when she got home and said her presentation was well received. She said she got some good questions and was glad she was able to help some folks better understand the muscles to be used and how to train them in the B.E.S.T method. Jim, she said you and Liz introduced yourselves and she was glad to meet you. I am very fortunate to have Staten Holmes as my hunting partner. Staten and John Magera are what is RIGHT with American archery.

I am glad to be known as Chelsea's dad.

She was very good in her presentatin and in all fairness, alot nicer to look at compared to Tom Parrish. I forgot what a great guy Staten was-we talked alot about shotguns and clay shooting. You are dead right about those two guys-In fact everyone I got to talk to there was interesting.

Jim C, is it possible for your to share some of the information you have learned in the Colorado Springs seminar? We, especially for us who live far from the USA  , would love to learn too. :)

Coach Lee's presentation had mostly practical demonstrations with the infamous stretchy bands but If you go to his website most of the shot cycle is explained there

Jim,
You can probably confirm this but Coach Lee's seminars help fill in the blanks from his book, Total Archery. As Jim says it is hands on. It helps your really understand what he is talking about in the book. I felt when I went in May that I was getting a drink of water with a fire hose. Some that were in attendance with me were hearing the material for the 3rd time and still gleaning more from him.

very true-some of it was confusing and we had a couple of extra "experts" who sometimes tried to explain the same things different ways (like the set up) but I finally figured it out mainly through Gary Holstein and Rick McKinny. We originally were told that the class was limited to 20 people but there were a bit more than that and it was almost a bit too much but everyone I saw was enthusiastic about learning

What a great 2 1/2 days. Most notable thing about the seminar to me was the diversity of "students" (coaches) in the room. Everyone from world champion archers to JOAD parents and coaches just starting out. What impressed me was how receptive every member of the group was to learning the BEST method. With this kind of open-minded enthusiastic reception, I think we are well on our way to developing a sound nationwide system (finally) to teach our archers.

All of the attendees worked hard, took good notes and asked good questions. There was a lot of material covered in a short time, and as some have pointed out, it's the kind of thing that I don't think you can be exposed to too many times. Every time you understand the method just a little bit better.

Tom Parrish's presentations are always an eye-opener. The graphs and data he has prepared showing the state of U.S. Archery as compared to the rest of the world speaks for itself. Equally impressive is the road map that he and coach Lee have prepared to bring the U.S. back to the top of the list.

These are informative, energizing sessions, and I highly recommend anyone who is interested to find the time to attend.

And Tom, being known as "Chelsea's Dad" ain't too bad ;) She represents her parents well.

John.

John tried to get some to attend some earlier morning PT but apparently no one took him up on that. I guess he will have to wait til another "dream team" camp:wink:

Actually Jim, one of the "students" did show up for PT on Saturday morning. Only problem is that I had already left on my run! She didn't realize that Tom and I were joking about the class doing PT  I had to apologize to her later that day when she asked "where were you this morning?"

John.

Good to hear your guy's program is on the up and up with coach Lee. The good thing about it. With coach Lee being so close. Alot of Canada's coaches are given the ability to attend seminars and learn. Which is filtering alot of good things up here. Either way, I wish all the archers luck both in the US and here on the endevoirs to become better.
