Well, I usually have my deer before the war (gun season) but not this year. So I will be headed out after things cool off with my bow again. Just wondering how many of you have had late season success (Dec-Jan) and what has worked well for you. I live in OH where we experience some cold weather. Obviously food becomes paramount to deer at that time... I know a guy that puts corn out in January for 2-3 weeks and then hunts the spot. He and his son each killed 150"+ bucks that way 2 years ago. Any thoughts? Thanks
If baiting is allowed in Ohio, then why not bring them to you? I agree, WNY gets real, REAL cold about then and any advantage I could take, I WOULD take, however baiting is illegal here.
If it's legal, then give it a go. I can't see anything much "easier" than hunting over a fresh corn pile when it's the late season when it's cold, the deer are trying to pack on lbs after the rut and there's probably no other food source around. I'd put a pail of water out there too, so at least they have something to drink after they eat.
Yes, set out a big pile of corn, then the pail of water, then maybe some other snacks like apples. You could put a couch out there for the to rest on too. Now that's huntin!
Part of REAL hunting is planning and strategizing to put yourself in the right place at the right time. It will be more rewarding to harvest a nice buck knowing you did the work and didn't just sit over bait.
I like December, the deer are more patternable then, the rut is the best but I have had really good luck late season.
