Heya folks,
I’m making the switch to traditional and have been reading these boards the last few weeks. Great site and sounds like a good bunch of people.
I’m fortunate enough to have a wife that understands my trad desire and purchased a Hatfield 55# TD for me as a present. After reading many posts here and pulling the bow, its obvious I need a lighter bow to train with.
I have purchased a Sierra 44# recurve from ebay, not quite the lbs I was looking for but the price was right. SO here is my immediate problem, I need a string for it, the bow has no amo marking on the bow itself. I read the string should be 3” to 4” shorter then Amo, How do I measure my recurve length, I measure my Hatfield tip to tip unstrung and the tape reads 58” and the bow is marked as a 62.
I have looked at many sites and would like to start building my own strings as well as eventually getting into arrows and then bows. For now I will get a pre-made string along with some supplies to start my own. I’m going nuts looking at these bows and not being able to shoot.

Thanks a ton
JD

Take a tape measure and get the length of the bow from string nock to string nock along the face of the bow (the side that faces you, when you're holding it). Suntract 3.5" from that and use that as a starting length.

(Techincally, it's along the back of the bow, but depending on the curves, it's usually easier to use the face and the numbers won't be that far off.)

Viper1 out.
