Country Star Blake Shelton Makes Donation to Flood Recovery Efforts
(Oklahoma City) Country star and Warner Brothers Records recording artist Blake Shelton today presented Gov. Brad Henry and Project Rebuild with an $100,000 check to assist Oklahomans impacted by recent severe weather and flooding.
Shelton recently hosted the second annual RAINDANCE concert in his hometown of Ada to raise money for Oklahomans in need. Just as he did last year, Shelton donated the proceeds to Project Rebuild, a public-private partnership of state officials, faith-based organizations and trade associations that builds and repairs homes for disaster victims.
Last year, the funds assisted victims of Oklahoma’s historic wildfire season. This year, the money will help Oklahomans recover from record rains and flooding. Since May, severe weather has pounded a number of Oklahoma communities, triggering heavy flooding that has damaged or destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses.
“I am so proud that my fellow Oklahomans came through another year and supported RAINDANCE to make it the success that it was,” said Shelton. “The monies raised went directly to families in need and this year, instead of wildfire devastation, we're looking at folks hit by floods. RAINDANCE was held in my hometown of Ada and there are many, many volunteers who helped out and gave freely of their time and money to help pull this event off. Not only my neighbors helped out but also some of my friends from the entertainment and sporting industries came out and pitched in. It gives me great pleasure on behalf of all of them to present this money to Project Rebuild.”
Gov. Henry echoed Shelton’s comments.
“Oklahomans have the biggest hearts in the world, and Blake Shelton is living proof of that,” said Gov. Henry. “I want to thank Blake, his fellow RAINDANCE participants and the Project Rebuild volunteers for their generous efforts. As Oklahomans rebuild and recover from this year’s flooding, this donation will provide a much-needed helping hand.”
State Insurance Commissioner Kim Holland, who has been involved with Project Rebuild since last year's wildfires, added, “Generosity in the time of need is a hallmark of Oklahomans and Blake’s leadership and personal generosity in this initiative are to be commended. Project Rebuild makes a difference in the lives of Oklahomans devastated by natural disasters; allowing them to restore hope and promise to their lives."
Launched in 1999 to help tornado victims, Project Rebuild is designed to assist those Oklahomans who either had no insurance or were underinsured and are having difficulty repairing or replacing their home. Organizers want Project Rebuild to be a continuing effort that helps Oklahomans who are affected by future disasters.
