I hope you guys are watching and supporting the American and Canadian rugby teams that are currently playing in the Rugby world cup hosted by the French in France.
The American team fought bravely and gave the World Champions England a go for there money and also a big scare:"Although the U.S. Eagles lost 28-10 to England in Lens on Saturday in their opening Group A game, the way the underdog Americans made the defending world champion toil for victory was widely seen as a moral victory for the underdog Americans."As per the Canadian press.:set1_applaud:
Canada stunned the Six Nations side with a deserved 17-9 lead early in the second-half after Jamie Cudmore, Craig Culpan and Morgan Williams all scored tries to raise hopes of a stunning upset.:set1_applaud:
Like I say, I hope you guys are watching the Rugby World Cup. I know it is not a well known sport in America, but your guys as well as the Canadians had me jumping up and down in delight. This two amateur sides gave the pro boys something to think about.:set1_applaud:
I know this is not archery related but had to post it on the busiest bord.

I saw that game over here in England and thought the Americans played well.
Probably better than we would have done if we'd played football against any of the NFL teams. In fact probably better than we would have done against many of the big college teams.
I've played both sports and know that they are completely different in style and the kind of athleticism needed to play them.
Looking forward to seeing the Giants play the Dolphins over here at Wembley in October, even though I'm a Cowboys fan...............

Come on now lads. (That's a kinda Brit word, right?) My 15 year old granddaughter played rugby at here high school here in Indiana. My first real exposure to the game. I firmly believe it was a game invented by the Aussies and Kiwis. (Did I get that right? Kiwis are from New Zealand right?)
Just look at it. Everybody runs around pretty much looking to smack into somebody or some body. There is a ball, but nobody seems to agree on what you're supposed to do with it. They'll put it on the ground and then the whole gang laps their arms over one another, then bang the hell out of everyone else trying to grab and run with it.
What a surprise it was when I saw the ball carrier just stop and kick the dadgum ball toward the goal line. Thought, oh its just soccer (football?) with blood. Thought I had it figured out.
Then I think I found out that a field goal counted more than a TD (that's a touchdown, 'scuse me). Maybe not though because I was getting pretty confused by that time. And nobody would take the time to explain it to me cause they were too busy yelling at the players and at each other.
Now I watched some of that world championship on early morning TV. It was alot different from what I saw at granddaughter's game. These guys lining up and throwing the ball back and forth and then getting tackled and then just standing up and giving the ball a little kick backwards to another guy and the thing started all over again.
Oh well, I didn't understand what was going on but those guys seemed to take more delight in smashing into each other and gouging, sucker punching, kicking and generally creating mayham on each other than scoring through team play.
Whew, getting long winded here, but I'll finish up by speculating that should one of those guys in short pants try to smash through Dwight Feeny I suspect he'll give up rugby for darts at the pub!
Gaday, Mate!

Nah Mate, most rugby players aren't real bright, most of them have had multiple knee and shoulder reconstructions on both knees and shoulders, some have even had quite serious neck injuries,(almost crippled several times) but they just keep coming back for more !

Rugby is a game that was played and created by the real men of days gone by. It is a hard game more suited to those not fond of wearing padding. Therefore it is understanding that minnow teams like the USA wont even feature in the World Cup, leave it to us guys in the Southern Hemisphere to battle out who will take the Cup home......

And what a battle it is going to be. I also believe that it is going to be a SA, AUS or NZ affair. I can't wait to get to the serious Rugby when the men's been separated from the boys.
There is a big hype about the quality of the Kiwi's but every one seems to forget that none of there teams was in the Super 14 Finals. It was SA al the way.
Yes, I know, they won the Tri-nation but the real Bok team was on a training camp during that time:rolleyes:.

Many believe that rugby was born in 1823 when William Webb Ellis "with fine disregard for the rules of football (remember football was yet to split into the various codes) as played in his time at Rugby school, first took the ball in his arms and ran with it, thus originating the distinctive feature of the Rugby game". Although it is worth pointing out that this is apocryphal as there is little in the way of evidence to substantiate this view, it is however, the popular view. So much so in fact that the international committee named the Rugby world cup the "William Webb Ellis Trophy".

To be totally honest, i'm not completely up to date with all the info, but i'm assuming that it has to do with certain players of colour not being allowed to play, or other players being pushed out to make spots for black players ?
Perhaps you could give us the story of what is happening, we don't hear to much about it over here, we get bits and pieces, but it seems to be a touchy issue that most don't want to discuss openly !

WoodyIt is a bit of an issue. I believe that this will be the last year that we will have a proper team at the Rugby world cup. Our current team only made it. Our minister of Sport and Culture wanted to confiscate our Boks passports to keep them here because he wasn't happy with the makeup of our team. You must remember that they don't look at a player like Habana as a player of color. The Boks had to ask for a meeting with President Thabo Mbeki to plead there case.
They were told in no uncertain terms that this was the last. I hope we qualify for the next world cup.

What exactly is the issue ?
Is it that black players aren't allowed on the team no matter how good they are ?
or is it that good white players are being pushed out to make a space for a black player who's not so good, but has to be there to keep everyone happy ?
I hope i'm NOT stirring things up, or causing trouble, i'm curious to exactly what the issue is ?

The next worldcup teams will be almost totally black, even if there would be better white players to choose from.

Ahhh, So it's political correctness gone mad ! I'm with you now, and no, it doesn't sound like it's going to be to good for SA sport !
Obviously if you have the talent and skills, then you deserve a spot regardless of colour, but to just put people in for political correctness, regardless of whether that person has any talent or skill is just ridiculous !
Sorry Guys, hopefully it won't take to many painfull defeats before the powers that be wake up to themselves !

Couldn't he get a spot on the team over there, or did he just decide he would rather play for England ?
Oh by the way, when are you coming to take Tony Greig back ? For the amount of time he has lived in this Country enjoying all the benefits and pleasures, you would think he could have a bit more loyalty to us, or nick off !

Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying Pieterson can't play !
I was just wondering how you all felt personally ?
Do you think he's betraying his Country, or just doing what he needs to, so he can continue his Cricketing career ?
But i'm serious about you taking Tony Greig back, he may have been a great player, but when he starts showing his loyalties to SA after living here for the last 30 years or how ever long he's been here, it really makes me wonder why he stays here ?

OI is Aussie slang, it's kind of like saying HEY !
Like you might say HEY, what are you doing ?
Or you could say OI, what are you doing ?
But the AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE OI OI OI thing is how we find each other in a big crowd, if you listen it usually starts with one person or a bunch of people, and they shout out AUSSIE, and if there's any other Aussie's nearby, they shout back OI, then the first group shouts out AUSSIE again, and the second group shouts back OI, and then of course it turns into AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE OI OI OI, and we all party on !!! :darkbeer: :darkbeer:

Woody,
My personal opinion(I know my fellow South Africans are not going to be happy)Australia and NZ play for their country, not for the money.Certain players are not as proud as they used to be.Before the last cricket worldcup I predicted that it would be a walkover for the Aussies. What a WC record they have.If I was Kevin I would have done the same. You will not believe what is going to happen in our country,a major disaster for sport

Yeah, now i just need the Aussie's to get up over Wales tonight in the Rugby ! Although i don't have that much faith that the Aussie's are going to make it all the way in the Rugby !
No, i have not hunted in Africa, unless you count the playstation when i play Cabela's outdoor adventures ! LOL ! If i ever had that kind of money, i would certainly give it a go, and a trip to America as well, to meet some of the people from AT ! :darkbeer: :darkbeer:

And what a battle it is going to be. I also believe that it is going to be a SA, AUS or NZ affair. I can't wait to get to the serious Rugby when the men's been separated from the boys.
There is a big hype about the quality of the Kiwi's but every one seems to forget that none of there teams was in the Super 14 Finals. It was SA al the way.
Yes, I know, they won the Tri-nation but the real Bok team was on a training camp during that time:rolleyes:.
By the way George Gregan and Stephen Larkham, are they not supposed to be in the old age home, or did they just start playing when they were very young.

The english are suffering badly at the moment in whatever they choose to do sporting and other wise! 6 X 6's in one over must be the lowest point in any bowlers life....
Just an aside, Woody - the problem with the affirmative action (aagainst the whites) is that it leaves the squad, players and coach in a state of perpetual demoralisation. As a coach you know that you have to play the hand that you are told to, and that is not necessarily the best that you have at your disposal. Picture trying to play cards, but you have to have two black aces before you can use the red ones...

WoodyNa, Whoody you know what. This trip taught me one thing. I know absolutely nothing about shooting my bow in strong wind. The first day I only managed a 473 and the second a 488. I felt like a Pommy:teeth:. It was my first field tournament and a awful introduction to the sport of Field Archery, but the next shoot can not be as windy as this one.

... an SA managed to throw their last game so successfully that we are out of the comp altogether. Like the Cap'n said, we seem to find ways to lose. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory...
They played like schoolboys. Philander showed no commitment when trying to take a catch. Boucher fell asleep after missing a catch. Personally, I have two words... Match Fixing!
I had humble pie for supper, and will indulge in another slice for breakfast.

Wish I could see any of the games. I was getting a free preview of Setanta Sports when the World Cup started but it went away. The US team sure had a good showing. It's not every year you can loose to Samoa and Tonga :embara:. US rugby is never going to be on the same level as the other countries because we have the NFL and kids here grow up playing football. Nothing will be able to dethrone that sport.
What are everyone's predictions for the quarterfinals? I don't see anything other than Australia v. New Zealand and S. Africa v. Argentina in the semis.

The problem is almost all of the good athletes play football until the end of highschool or college and have never seen a rugby ball before. I think it does make a difference when you're playing teams where the players learned the game while they were learning to walk .
As for my semi predictions, what the heck happened? New Zealand must have choked because they were the team to beat and France hadn't looked entirely impressive up until that game. Deep down I think I'd like to see Argentina pull it out.

I still don't think it would make that much difference, we get a few players each year that swap from one code to the other (Rugby League & Rugby Union) and while the two games are similar, there are still a lot of differences as well, but the players seem to pick it up quick enough.
I also think they need to put the same amount of time, money, and training into it like they do with the NFL, then you guys would have a team to be proud of, you only need to make it to the elimination rounds and then anything can happen, just look at what happened to Australia and New Zealand, and Fiji almost pulled off another upset against South Africa as well.
There's nothing i would like to see more than America and Canada get really serious about the Rugby & Cricket World Cups, and i guess we should have Russia and China in it as well to make it a truly world game, but you have to bring your "A" side and be 110% comitted.
All the World Cup events are great, it's like miniature warfare, you have these little armies of people representing their countries in battle on the sporting field to see who can be crowned the best in the world ( and have it actually mean something, unlike the NFL, where only American teams play, and then they call themselves world champions anyway ???)
So hopefully we will be seeing more of you guys at future world cup events ! :darkbeer: :darkbeer:
