Just started with my new longbow. Finally got one that fit. 50#@28"-I have been shooting "the other way (wheels)" for a LONG time.(LOL!)

#1-I just bought the correct spined arrows-(Beman 500) I shoot off the self (or so I'm told) - Should my cock feather be up-down- side-or riser? The bow seems to shoot best with it toward the riser, but......

#2 Tips 100-125 or higher? I have the 29" Beman 500 @ 50#

#3 Any other shooting tips will be GREAT!!!

Feathers facing away from riser (out). Most will say you are "over bowed" I say go shootin' - lower pound eg. 35lbs working on form 1st. I'm not sure but I think the 500 are light - I have read some say they work for them at #50 but who knows - on that basis use 100 grain. The more tip weight the weaker it will make the arrow (spline). Here is a tip for practice - go shoot - alot.

I will agree, 50# is too much for a first time stick shooter, but you already bought it sooooo. The 500's should be fine but the tip weight is going to depend on you and the bow. Try some different weights and see which works best for YOUR set up. As for the cock feather, most tend to shoot with it out but if tuned correctly, it wont matter.

I think you're going to need to add some weight to the tips or you're going to be overspined-I would look at 50 or 100 grain brass inserts. I shoot similiar poundage at 29 inches with high performance recurves and still have to add 50-70 grains of weight for the total insert weight and shoot 150 grain heads with the same spine arrow you are using-otherwise they are overspined. Are your arrows grouping to the left? If so, this would indicate that the arrows are likely overspined. There are weight systems available from 3 Rivers that will allow you to adjust the insert weight to achieve the correct spine.

Good Luck!

I shoot the ICS 500 from 54# and 56# longbows and get great performance with 100 grain inserts and 125 grain points. If you have any trouble with arrow flight, try increasing your point weight.

Cock feather position varies among shooters. Just rotate your nocks until you find the position that gives you best flight.
