View Full Version : Saw something odd in the woods today

Was wondering if you all have any ideas what I was looking at? I was walking down a narrow (50 yards wide) wooded ditch today looking for a couple good tree stand locations when I saw a large area (10 yards by 10 yards) of weeds and undergrowth that had been matted down. Also, there was maybe 20 eaten ears of corn laying around the area.

The ditch is surrounded by corn on each side, and I know no one else hunts it. I thought it might almost be a multiple deer "hangout" or bedding area, but I've never really heard of that, especially with all the ears of corn.

What do you all think?

Well I have seen beaver chew down corn stalks and bring them down a ditch to use on their dam. (Maybe they brought them down the ditch and run out of water and then a deer came along and ate the corn. I know that this doesn't sound to reasonable though)

Or if you have hogs I have heard of them laying down palmetto's and stuff to make a nest in. So if you walk through it and some little piglets run out from under your feet then watch out for momma :mg:

I'd guess deer, they will bed down in the same area, especially if its the best area. I've routinely kicked several deer out of beds in pine areas that can't be more then 20 x 20. I've also found areas in the snow where it was very clear that multiple deer were sleeping in the same area (ie: snow everywhere except in specific deer sized spots.

30' x 30' of matted down underbrush and weeds from raccoons That must be a LOT of the little buggers and they are probably planning on a revolt... I suggest a .223 or .243 from about 100 yards out (make it sporting)

Yes, without a doubt, a Yeti-man bed, they love corn on the cob, be careful out there.
