ok, so unless I score this saturday, it's tag soup for me.
I'll be bowhunting and my son will be using a 20ga.
We'll be in the blind with my deke's.
Let's suppose 2 shootable turkey's come in...I want my son to have an opportunity to take a bird more than I want one for myself, however, given the assigned equipment, and from the stories I've read...
I'm thinking I take the first shot with the bow and let him follow up either immediately or shortly thereafter with the 20?
you should be pretty safe with that assumption- mostly the other bird will attack the downed bird or look confused unless your bow is as loud as your sons shotgun-ps get those birds in close for that 20 gauge or they may tip you for the massage
if a double comes in dont rush the second kill shot. When the first bird is flopping the second will check it and see it is down and come back to thump it. Gun blast or not the pecking order will cause the second turkey to try to be dominit over the dead bird. If you you are using decoys kill the first and let out some quick yelps then the second birds instincts will take over. good luck
Well you can't get a double if you don't go...right??
I'll be happy if we just see some in the field. Suppose to get rain the night before and temps will be around 10 degrees cooler than what we've had lately so I'm hoping they wake up frisky!!! Posted via Mobile Device
I was using my X-Force and he had his trusty Remington 870. 2 birds came in and I shot one with my bow and the 2nd bird stayed within 20 yards and Dad shot him. The stuffer decoy was 10 yards from the blind.
Just be sure that you put your bird down, and don't have him running or flying off. If you put him down, your son is going to have a shot most likely.
My son and I did just what you are talking about last year. I used a magnus Bullhead and dropped the first tom, at 5 - 6 yards and my son killed the 2nd with his 20 gauge at about 10 yards.
As several others have stated. Move the decoys in closer. Six to ten yards is about right.
