One of the most aggravating things about buying any stand is that if you don't have a buddy with one, you can't "try" it out. You really can't blame the store because of the liability of someone falling, but it sure would be nice.
Here is what you need to think about between the Viper and the Goliath. If you are on the larger side (like me 6'2" 275) and you hunt where it gets cold (just about anywhere) the Goliath gives you more room to move when you are bundled up in winter clothes. I had a viper and it was more than comfortable when I was in two layers or less, but when I bundled up my clothing would make noise against the side of the stand as I stood up. It was not horrible, but if I had a deer close, it certainly made me think twice about standing up.
The difference in weight is not that much between the two, but having the extra 2" in width is certainly nice.
