I'm sure this has been discussed at one point or another, but I'm curious what you guys think. My buddy and I recently debated which is more difficult to hunt, turkeys or deer. My vote was for deer, for a variety of reasons, but # 1 is because the scent component can stop things before they even begin.
Just FYI, I posted this same question on my blog and included a few of your responses in the post. If you don't want your comment mentioned in the post, just PM me and I will remove it.
Turkeys are buy far a lot harder for me .
How about turkeys from a tree stand ,your real lucky if you can draw on one. There eye sight is 2nd to none, even when you think they cant see you you make the silgest move ,only to hear the dreded put,put and there all on high alert.
Turkeys are easier because you can hunt them from a blind without brushing it in and they're far more easily fooled by decoys.
Turkeys do pick up movement better than a deer though and can see in color which is an advantage for them.
In my zone turkeys...
there are 100X more deer than turkeys in my county. It's ag land and you can have a hunter a 1/4 mile away calling to the same bird. You will be in two different woodlots working on the same tom.
Deer for me are harder to hunt. Around here they go nocturnal with the slightest hunting pressure. Turkeys only move around during daylight hours which gives me a huge advantage because that's when I can hunt them and if I can locate where they are heading to roost in the evening, I know where they will be in the morning
i seem to have a aharder time with Turkeys than deer..granted most deer i have shot have been does but i cant seem to do much with the Turkeys....still love chasin them anyways which is the most fun part
This depends on WHERE you are hunting! Some places are flooded with Turkey and getting one in isn't very hard at all. Same with deer. Other places are exactly the opposite for either creature.
question was harder to hunt not kill, mature buck without ?
you and him one on one with no scents or attractents
no food plots or bait, lets see how well you do
i vote deer because they have great noses. they also don't vocalize like turkeys do giving away their location. turkeys might just seem harder because its such a short season compared to deer.
A mature whitetail is hands down harder to bowhunt in MOST cases. However, take a blind out of the equation for bowhunting turkeys and you have one of the toughest quarry to arrow with a bow. :darkbeer:
How about when its just you with your bow, at ground level, using no decoy, blind, treestand etc? Turkeys hands down then.
Otherwise, it really depends how you go about it.
