It's a Gary Fisher Marlin. Will post real bike pics later.

I sold my Cannondale hard tail single speed last spring. Still miss that bike. These pics just remind me that I need to ride more.

Heard those doubles at Sea Otter were horribly undersized for the amount of speed you carry into them. Way to suck them up!

this was the last year I will race the otter, the DH course is more like a dirt jump run, not made for real DH speed. pretty lame.

Post up a review if you decide to get this bike. I've also been doing some research for a new bike and this is one of 3 that I'm considering. I've narrowed it down to the Motobecane 600ht, Haymaker 1500, or Forge Sawback 5xx. Looks like the Dawes may be the best deal.

    Flashback

Man those pics are giving me flashbacks and a cas of the useta's. I useta have a pair of bikes one Specialized Stumpjumper FSR with pretty much nothing stokc but the rear shock and a KHS A-lite 4000 hardtail frame I built up with race parts.

Enough of that, I'm off to e-bay to find a new bike.

Useta's? Where's the Huffys? Bikes have come along way since my Huffy upgrade to a Cannondale, 13 years ago! Maybe I'll have to head to ebay myself. Nice bikes folks.

I highlighted some areas, that makes me question how good of a deal this bike is. Components can always be upgraded (they break), so I think a solid frame is important. Most agree that Giant's offer the most bang for your buck. The 8 sped is kind of an issue because almost everything available now is 9 speed. The Shifters are a huge part of the drive train. I try not to skimp too much here. If you are going Shimano, go at least Deore. For mechanical discs, look at the Avids and Hayes.

    Check out this link.
    http://www.derbybicyclecenter.com/bi...e_specials.htm

You can probably do a search for some of these and find them even cheaper (I got my Giant Reign X1 (2008) from Taylor's Bike Shop (http://taylorsbikeshop.com/product-l...n-bikes-pg443/)

Advantage I have is I know how to work on bikes for the most part (still hate bleeding hydraulic brakes).

TCR1, good catch on the listing. I would also add that the seat, seatpost, headset, hubs, and stem are very very "common" lower grade parts well.

I would reccomend other bikes as well.
I have bought, built, and rode some of the bike from bikesdirect. I won't say they are bad but, you might be able to find better elsewhere. A quality frame is just that- QUALITY.

    Specialized Stumpjumper PRO

I live my Pro. So quick and nimble. A much better ride than my last Fisher Sugar.

All I want to do is upgrade the tires. The factory meats are less than perfect for all conditions I use them in.

Specs on that one are much better. Not sure why they are specing Tektro brakes on that though. Also not familiar with Skye (Handlebars and such), but I have been out of really serious mt. biking for a while...well at least out of buying new and better gear. I just bought a Giant Reign X1 though and it is about the top build (Reign X0 is the top) and I am still finding things I don't like...but I have built up bikes from frames, which costs a ton more (and really isn't worth it when you can ride the other stuff until it wears out, then upgrade as you need to).

Also, I found a guy on Denver Craigs list selling a pair of Avid BB7 mechanical discs for 30.00...that is a steal (if they function properly) and I am sure there are other similar deals out there.

I like the motobecane specs a lot better than the other bike.

Oh yeah, if you are planning to wear clipless pedals, see if they will do a pedal exchange with you. Trade in the pedals they offer for a set of clipless. I prefer the Time ATAC syste, lots of people like the candy's (Crank Bros), and seems less are riding Shimano's SPD...I could be wrong though.

I too prefer the atac pedals. Way easier in/out and not as weak as Egg Beaters or some of the similar Candies.

I was looking at ordering from Bikesdirect before I bought my Forge Sawback. The main reason I went with the Forge was the fact that the frame is made by Giant and is very simialar to their products. I figured as long as I have a strong frame, I can always change out components later and have this bike for a long time. I just recently passed the 100 mile mark without any problems at all. I love it for what I use it for. Commuting to work, biking with the family, and occasional trails. I'm not out there beating the crap out of it. I think any of those bikes from bikes direct would be fine as long as your not out there seriously burning up the trails. Personally I think keeping price down is essential for beginners. You just dont need to invest to much before you decide if its for you. :twocents:

me with the kids and the Specialized Rockhopper Pro comp. Nice bike - thinking of upgrading to a Stumpy this year - something with a bit more aggressvie geomtry that sticks the corners a better.
