    Great excersise for any archer

Works all the muscles used while shooting a bow.

I mean all Three good shoulder exercises

    http://www.ast-ss.com/training/exerc...?bp=Back&pn=15

    http://www.ast-ss.com/training/exerc...=Shoulder&pn=2

    http://www.ast-ss.com/training/exerc...=Shoulder&pn=9

This is a good place to find illustrations for many exercises.

    Note
Realize these are used alot in archery when shooting. One might just want to do the upright rows only for shoulders. Shoulders seem to get worked in ever exercises

Im also adding this one. If you have lower back promblems, this is an excellant back excersise for helping the lower back. Doesnt hurt the waist line either.

    Chest

I really feel two of these will give an archer plenty of workout for chest

On the dumbell flys. I like to have the dumbell horizontal with body on downside and twist the dumbell to a vertical position on the way up and finish in that position. Gives good strech feel

FYI: Chest has NOTHING to do with drawing a bow. The only time chest is involved is during the let down (if you decide not to release). Still, symmetry is good and it is even better to give antagonists the same work that protagonists receive.

I never said the chest has anything to do with drawing a bow. Actually thats why there just two chest excersizes. But you need to work your chest. This is a good over all workout. You get a good workout and do work the shoulders and triceps. The chest is a primary muscle that works while pushing anything. I have been ask for a workout by members here for many years. Most that have taken my advice have thank me more than once. This is just a good examle workout that will cover just about ever thing for a good over all workout. Nothing more or nothing less. This thread started by three members contacting me about a workout I felt was good and would I send them one.

Landform please post your workout and please help the members here but dont try and break mine down. I spent 20yrs in gyms with some of the best in the world. Traveled all over the US. You obviously know a great deal and its easy to tell from your post. Just give the members your thoughts and post your workout for members to read.

Im prombly in the worst shape of my life from just shooting a bow the last two years. Believe me I could sure use a little free weight training and arobics more than anyone.

    Daniel,

For someone with low back problems, how do you recommend incorporating this exercise into a workout routine?

Really depends on the back promblem. When I was training I just had folks use less poundage. I know the new trend is to strengthan back with the large rubber balls and it actually works. I use them to repair my back. Talk with your primary Doctor on your back and ask him.

I was ask by several members to post this thread

Instead of pming each a workout. Which I have done for many years here.

Theres so many opionions about working out who knows whats best.

This is my opionion and you can take it or leave it. I have always said try it and see if it works for you.

Even though I still dont workout. I do go train and still teach youth and adults how to workout. Im well respected in my community for this. Most the members that know me here can certianly back me up on this one. After the way I shot in local tournament today, maybe I need to go back to the gym

    Good luck guys

One thing I didnt say was be sure and breath in and take lots of air while lifting. I breath in on the downside and breath out while letting the weight back up.

I can name several members here that diffiantly know there stuff when it comes to lifting weights. We have some excellant body builders and personal trainers that are members here. Olympic coachs that actually train are archers in the weight room. I have talked with many of them.

Its not what you do for yourself in this world thats going to matter when we die. What matters is what we do for others. Ill continue to help anyone at anytime I can, whether its lifting, hunting or anything. Many here know me personally and realize this is just me. Lots of great members here that would do the same anyday. It what makes this place special I just hope we can continue this thread in a peacefull and cival manner If not Ill just lock it down and members can open it and look at it or not.

    Thanks!

Thanks for the exercises! I also heard (for those not ready for pull ups, like myself) that holding a big can of soup in front of you at arms length for an extended period of time also helps!

Isometric excersize can be damaging. Keep the elbows slightly bent.

    The Top 3 Archery Stretches

Stretching is one of the most under-utilized techniques for improving athletic performance, preventing sports injury and properly rehabilitating sprain and strain injury. Don't make the mistake of thinking that something as simple as stretching won't be effective.

Below are 3 of the most beneficial stretches for archery. Obviously there are a lot more, but these are a great place to start. Please make special note of the instructions beside each stretch.

Arm-up Rotator Stretch: Stand with your arm out and your forearm pointing upwards at 90 degrees. Place a broom stick in your hand and behind your elbow. With your other hand pull the bottom of the broom stick forward.

Rotating Stomach Stretch: Lie face down and bring your hands close to your shoulders. Keep your hips on the ground, look forward and rise up by straightening your arms. The slowly bend one arm and rotate that shoulder towards the ground.

Assisted Reverse Chest Stretch: Stand upright with your back towards a table or bench and place your hands on the edge. Bend your arms and slowly lower your entire body.

The above 3 stretches are just a small sample of stretching exercises that will help you improve your performance and eliminate archery injuries.

Don't forget, for lower back troubles you also need to strengthen the abs...I went through crap because I forgot this!

Here is one: kettlebell bent press (description w/photo here: http://www.mikemahler.com/kettlebell_exercises.html) go easy on these or you will be really hurting

Realize these are used alot in archery when shooting. One might just want to do the upright rows only for shoulders. Shoulders seem to get worked in ever exercises

Hey, I followed the links and I don't see the exercises listed or how to find them at this website. Have they moved, are they still on this site?

Thanks for sharing this information. How about a prolonged head stand? I heard that it strengthens your neck muscles considering that it supports our deltoids?

I think its very useful to us, but it's probably not the most effective way to train your abs. High reps are not as useful for building strength as using lower reps with weights or isometric holds. And there is a whole body of literature supporting that.

I like your post about Exercise. I think every one have to do regular exercise. Being a good archer demands not only a good eye but, also powerful shoulders, back and forearm muscles. If you have been into shooting the bow or bow hunting for any length of time you probably have come to the realization that being stronger will improve not only your aim but also reduce or prevent injury.

I really feel these two will provide a lot of goalkeeper training for the chest. On flights dumbbell. I like the dumbbell horizontally with the body in the fall, upright and rotate the dumbbell on the way and end up in this position. It makes sense feel.I upper body stretching exerciser help the archer.

Try doing seated rows, but instead of using both arms do one at a time. This will mimic pulling the bow back and help with muscle memory.

    An awesome tri workout-

Grab a set of light dumbells, 15-30 lbs

Get in a pushup position and commense doing a pushup, on the way back up bring one dumbbell up until your elbow is at a 90 degree angle while you are stablizing yourself with the other arm.

Alternate each arm with every pushup. Your tri's will burn after a cpl sets

It is very good topic for discussion about great exercise for any archer. It is very helpful and interesting for every one. There are so many different kind of exercise are available like Push ups, Pull ups, elbows slightly bent and many more but according to me i think that elbows slightly bent is the best exercise for any archer.

I agree with your point such a nice topic. Its give the lot of information for health. It could only happen at a certain time of year, at a certain time of day. And its provide best ways to stay in shape for archery is by using isometric exercise equipment.
