I live in Mt. Vernon and I have never deer hunted Hovey, but I have seen many BIG deer down there and have seen some killed over the past few years. I have duck hunted down there many times and the way the place is managed and all the hunters that go down during deer season I would say stay away. Too much headache for what its worth. Many tree stands stolen, in fact so many DNR put gps micro chips on some to catch who was doing it, and way too many hunter-hunter confrontations.

There is also Sugar Ridge and Bluegrass Fish and Wildlife area. Not to far just outside of Evansville which is about 20 minutes from Mt. Vernon. Not sure about the deer hunting at these places. In more of a hilly area not far from a lot of stripper pits so there has to be some good bucks there. Good luck, and sorry about Hovey, seems the state has forgoten about us in the the southern part of the state, they quite spending on Hovey years ago and its a shame could be very good hunting. Maybe one day it will get better again, but for now I give up on it. Shame.

Hovey is a great place to go. We go every year for a week and hunt it hard... Lots of deer there and some BIG boys.

It all depends on where you want to go there. Behind the lake is only open to Bowhunting. There are quite a few people that go back there. I have killed 4 deer there in the past 4 years. Mainly does but have seen some big boys running around there. Its a good place if you don't mind other people. There are guys that show up just before day light. Its public so you will have those guys anyway. I do recomend taking a climber. Ladder stands will some how sprout legs if you aren't careful. There is quite a bit of land for everyone. I have found some off the beatn path places that look promising for this year.
