Great thread. It's a crying shame it was abandoned a year ago. Warrants more ongoing discussion...

#3 Uncle Ted - if you're not familair with his contribution to popular culture, listen to 'Wango Tango'. A passionate bowhunter to boot!
#2 Phil Keaggy - as a guitar player myself, can't even come up with the words to describe his virtuosity and character...
#1 Eddie Lang - singlehandedly invented jazz guitar. No superlatives do him justice. He's THE man.

Oops, don't know what I was thinking-- thread has not been sitting abandoned. I think I was looking at page one when I got that idea in my head. Some really astute postings so far. It's good to see guys like Django, Mississippi John Hurt and Chet Atkins included in the conversation!

By far my favorite is Neal Schon from Journey. He can shred, but he still plays with feeling and realizes you don't need to shred for a good solo.

Lincoln Brewster is another favorite too.

Completely agree. The solo in the live version of Lights/Stay Awhile doesn't have alot of ripping, and shreadding, but it certainly takes some serios skills, and it has alot of heart.
