Will a 60lb compound kill an elk?

I've got my "50" treat coming. Wife turned 50 and wanted to go on a cruise with a bunch of her girlfriends from work. I relented and promised myself I'd get to go elk hunting someday. Won't make it this year, but maybe next year.

I've been bowhunting 36 years and have killed lots of whitetails. For the past 10 years I've been shooting 60 pounds with a 28.5 arrow. Is that enough to kill an elk?

I killed mine with a 60lb and 27" draw last season.. Its all determined by shot placement.

Your 60lb bow will get a complete pass thru on a BS elk with a good sharp head unless you hit the shoulder. The last 5 elk I've killed was with a max of 64lbs. Ranged anywhere for 12' to 52 yards. Don't worry you'll be fine. Just practice shot placement, know your capabilities, and be sure and have a good sharp head.

maybe just use a slightly heavier arrow than you use for whitetails preferably at least over 400gr if you dont already...

I don't know at what point we became so conservative in the power required to drive a broadhead through critters. 60 pounds is far and away more than enough to drive a modest broadhead end-for-end on an elk.

All you have to do is avoid the big bones...same as the 70# guys.
The kill is the satisfying, indeed essential, conclusion to a successful hunt. But, I take no pleasure in the act itself. One does not hunt in order to kill, but kills in order to have hunted. Then why do I hunt? I hunt for the same reason my well-fed cat hunts...because I must, because it is in the blood, because I am the decendent of a thousand generations of hunters. I hunt because I am a hunter.- Finn Aagard

No. A 60 pound bow will not kill an elk.

A broadhead on an arrow shot from a 60 pound bow will kill one.

A 60# bow will kill anything in North America. A 50# bow could too.

I'm sure the Native Americans killed countless elk, moose, deer and other large critters with way less poundage out of their stick-bows...

As long as you only use fixed heads, and have an arrow that weighs at least 550 grains, and it's not a bowtech, and you have super tuned it five different times after you get to camp, and and...

Does a 60lb recurve kill an elk? The better question is will you be able to steady those nerves to do everything right?

One thing to remember is that a 60# bow made in the last few years will shoot the same arrow as fast as a 70# bow of 10-15 years ago. 10-15 years ago no one would ask if 70# was enough.

AMEN!!!! I have several freinds that have killed elk with 43-48 lb RECURVES and get pass thru's.....getting an elk to stand still in the right spot is ALOT harder
