    Smart Phone App. For Hunting

Just bought the new Droid X (1st smart phone) and was wondering if anyone has found a good app for hunting. GPS or TOPO maps. I already have goggle earth.

I have this phone as well, and I love it. Any good app suggestions would be great!

Now that it takes HD video (on our phone, can you believe that!) I wonder if we could mount it on our bows and film.

    the weather channel app

any games you can play when you get bored on stand (minimal movement)

rack scorer helps you add up

there are a few good GPS programs that will help you track exactly where you have walked and give you all the stats....but they will cost some money

    Andriod Apps

The Weather Channel is an absolute must. I also downloaded an app called My Tracks. It's a FREE gps tracking app.
    From their website...

See location / progress on a map, Monitor real-time statistics: time, distance, speed, elevation, View elevation profile by time or distance
Zoom, pan elevation profile, Create waypoints, Create statistics waypoints (splits tracks into subtracks)

    To share tracks, you can:
    1.Upload to Google Map
    2.Upload to Google Docs
3.Email as a Google My Map link
4.Embed Google Map on a website

I like the idea of the share feature. I go hunting alone most of the time and most days I'm gone all day. This will make it easy to check in with the girlfriend to let her know I'm ok and where I'm at if something should go wrong.

Also- I just discovered this app today and it has some serious potential...The code writer should remarket( and make some changes to tweak it for hunting(reverse the triangle from heights)...
Anyway, It is an Android App that could be used as a range finder...

I thought about mounting my droid on the bow to take pictures and film. I looked into car windshield\interior mounts.I think that they could be easily modified to fit a bow.

I have an app on my phone which will send the GPS coordinates of its present location when sent a specially-formatted text message. I have a WiMo smartphone though.

The Android Market also has "Latitude" ...
THis application can track your other droid friends location on a google map ( satellite image, topo, street etc) so that you can see where your buddies are when you are all out in the field. It shows your location on google maps( another application that is standard issue on android phones)...

I have seen an app for fishing that will record time, temp, pressure and gps location when you catch fish. That would be a great app if they could do one for hunting.

Here is the link for Latitude (It is automatically installed on 2.2OS Froyo( that i forced this week instead of waiting for) that will be installed on 2.2 OS.
    http://www.google.com/latitude/intro.html

There is also Chrome (Google browser) tophone ( chrometophone) that allows you to navigate to whatever app you want on the internet and to easily send it to your smart phone( if you cannot find what you are looking for on that little phone screen).

Here is smart measure on the android market:

I have used a program called Footprints with my Droid Eris. When you take a picture of a location it saves the GPS coordinates with it. Then I put them into google earth. I used it successfully one night after tracking a deer for nearly two hours my Grandfather shot. We got tired and went back to the house. I put the coordinates into Google earth and realized the deer crossed a logging road only 50ft in front of where we stopped tracking. Went back in later that night and found where the deer crossed the logging road and found the deer.

It seems like the compass's don't work at all. I wouldn't trust one as they seem very erratic and unpredictable.

I would highly recommend Footprints (Also already on your phone). Footprints can also export a location to your google map on your phone. From there you can turn on your satellite view by selecting layers from the menu screen.

Footprints looks like it will work quite well in the field. Could take pictures of scrapes, rubs, scat and even deer...

Good idea. Gonna test it out today to see how well it works (If my Eris would ever catch a GPS signal here at work... )

When I find a place I like I just take a picture of it. When I get home that night I get on Google earth and transfer the GPS coordinate and I am good to go. It is then saved on my phone and Google earth.

Also, Topo Maps Lite seems like it would work ok. There is a pay version as well as a free. I just downloaded the light version and it seems like it would work well as a topo app...
