    Potential Move to Winsten-Salem, NC

    Hi Guys,

I have been offered a position with a company in this area, which will require a move by me. How is the deer hunting in this area? Land access? If not able to access private land, is there state land available that has decent hunting? Mainly deer and turkey, but I understand there is an open season more or less now on hogs?

Are there archery clubs, especially traditional clubs there?

    Thanks,
    Adkarcher

You have Droptine Archery in Advance. Straight down I-40 about 15 min. They also have a club called Dirtnap bwhunters. You will not find better people anywhere nor will you find a anyone better to service your equipment. Robert and Pam are great people!!!

I think you will have good deer hunting in that part of the state. There are also many opportunities to shoot your bow in that area as well. If you want to move South, that is a very good option and the woods will look like what you are used to seeing in NY.

So that part of NC is empty of deer just like NY? I hope not. Trying to escape that... I fly down next week to visit the site and make ny final decision. Is private land access an issue or the state lands real crowded? If I understand the regs correctly, it looks like Sunday deer hunting is only bow during the gun season?

On private land only, no Sunday bow hunting on gamelands, unless they have changed and I am not aware of it.

Nope hasn't changed at all. Still private land bow only on Sundays. I'm trying public land for the first time this year. I am actually pretty excited about it.

During the archery season, can you bowhunt public land on Sundays? Or just private? During the muzzleloader and gun season, then, if you want to hunt Sunday, it must be bow and only on private land? That will take some adjusting.

If you looking for public land to hunt there is some decent hunting on most of the gamelands , you just got to put the work into it . Best thing to do if your looking for public land is go to www.ncwildlife.org and look at the gamelands maps .If your lucky you might find some priviate land that doesn't cost you a arm and a leg . If you are ever interested in joining a archery club check out Forsyth archery club , you can contact me through here or go to mygpaa.com if your interested in joining sometime , our range is open 365 days a year .

I will be moving, I offically accepted the offer yesterday. I start July 9 and will drive down after the 4th. I plan on flying down the week of 6/11 to find a place, looking for a small town (like I have now) with a good school. I will certainly look into the club once I get settled in. Thanks.

Walburg is a good area , it's in Davidson Co , good schools and about 15 min from Winston . It's about as small a little town as you get around here .

Statesville isn't to far of a drive either.
If your in the area Bloodtrackers archery out of Troutman is a good shop to check out.
And we have a outdoor range.plus some other clubs in the area like Brushy mountain and sage creek that are good to shoot at.

What is the wild hog population like in that area? Is it a huntable population or more that you may stumble across one now and then?

Hogs are non-existant in the Forsyth and surrounding counties as far as I know and can tell. I mostly hunt in Wilkes county and we have bears, but no hogs. I went on a hog hunt last year in Anson County, NC, which is just before you cross over to SC. Plenty of piggys there. Public land tracts in the triad will be very small relative to public lands you are probably used to in NY. Pisgah NF is very large and is in the mountain, though, is within striking distance for you, and can have excellent turkey hunting. I came to NC fro MS and hunted a good mix of private and public land back home, but almost immediately ruled out public in the triad region of NC after getting here. Then again, I may not know what I"m missing, LOL. It's takes some work, but you can find private leases here, but may not in Forsyth county itself. Urban hunting is expanding, as well. Some of the highest deer densities I've seen are in my Lewisville neighborhood.

You have Rural Hall, King, Pinnacle ( dont have a stop light ) and Pilot Mountain all right there on 52, from Pilot it would take about 30 minutes to get to Winston. Will you be working downtown Winston? If so it might take a lil longer to downtown depending on traffic. I agree with strut buster urban hunting is expanding cause thats what I do. Have got great deer on cam, missed a good 120 to 130 last year and all 100 yards for the house. Hopefully you will meet some good people and take up pretty quick down here its not a bad place to live at all.

I will be working in Winston. I drive up to King and looked the area over to possibly live in. I will be down there next week, right after the 4th. I will probably start with the gamelands and take it from there. This year might be tough with a new job and all, but your season is quite a bit longer down there when compared to NY as well.

There are a lot of gamelands in Caswell county which is a little over an hour drive. They have archery only sections. In Burlington we have a Traditional club Sissapahaw Traditional Archery (check out our website) we have a big fun shoot coming up in Aug. Look forward to seeing you around.LH

My boys are 4 and 11. Right now, I am in Clemmons. My wife and kids are coming down later this fall, after things get settled in NY. The 4 year old will turn 5 in late September, but that is too late for kindergarten in NC. However, if he starts school in NY, he can transfer in. we are in the process of looking for a house to rent somewhere within 15-20 minutes of W-S.

Is there much private land that is accessible in Forsyth or Stokes Co., somewhere in this area? Would like to get some so that I can at least bow hunt on Sundays. Not used to this no Sunday hunting thing.

There is some private land out there. You just have to go out and knock on doors. We find new places to turkey hunt every year by doing that. Deer hunting places are more difficult but there are some out there.
