Building some arrows for my wife's Elevation. I ordered some 23 series arrows in 500 spine. She has a 27" draw and the bow is currently at 52 pounds (maxed out).

I'm thinking about cutting the arrows at 27" and using a 70 or 90 grain tip. I know that will make them very stiff but give her good speed for 3D. The set up above should get around 260-265 fps. Is the 70 grain tip okay or would the 90 be better?

She had been shooting 42 pounds using a 400 spine, 23 series arrow and getting about 242 fps.

    Thoughts or suggestions?

    Morning Nation!

KJ I would think she would be ok with the 70 grain tips. Worse case you can swap out tips but I don't see a reason why she wouldn't be able to get those to fly well.

Thanks Dustin. I've never built arrows with points less than 90 grains. The difference is only about 6 fps in speed but I think she's already shooting much better with the bow maxed out and I think moving up from 242 to 265 FPS for 3D will be beneficial for her. If I need to I can always add some weights to the tips.

I was considering going to a smaller profile vane but I think I'm going to stick with Blazers.

KJ I agree with Sprcrw with the added draw weight she should be fine with either the 70 or 90gr points.

    KJ,
One big concern for me is the total wind drift with that build. It is started with a 23 series so you automatically having large potential for wind drift. Most I know don't shoot that fat of a shaft for outdoor. Combine that with the lighter 500 spine and the lighter tip weight, then it is magnified. I do believe that the arrow will tune and shoot great, but would be a little wary of the drift aspects of it.

Thanks Caleb. I'm building these for 3D specific and right now she's shooting the known 40 at the ASA. At that distance do we need to worry about wind drift that much? We're getting ready to try our hands at some field archery and I'm going to get here some micro diameter shafts for those distances.

You can definitely make it work. I know of a lot of people that run similar setups. My personal preference for 3D is more 17-19 series in order to gain a bit of mass weight (not a lot) and have better wind bucking capabilities
