Chatfield, MN - November 15, 2013 - The Pope & Young Club, a non-profit North American conservation and bowhunting organization is proud to announce Dan Fleming as recipient of the 2013 Pope and Young Club Conservation Award.
Dan Fleming, a longtime member from New Mexico, was presented with the 2013 Conservation Award. Dan’s advocacy and active volunteerism spans more than 30 years and a wide array of endeavors, including workhorse with the United Bowhunters of New Mexico, champion of ethical and responsible hunting, bowhunter education instructor, projects with the US Forest Service, BLM, USFWS, and with the New Mexico Game and Fish Department and its commission on bowhunting issues. But his work with youth, especially the Boy Scouts of America really is extraordinary.
Dan has been a BSA archery merit badge instructor of 17 years and is a rifle and shooting merit badge instructor as well as an Instructor trainer. He designed, developed and implemented the 3-D Apache Springs camp archery program at BSA’s Philmont Ranch in 2000. Since then he’s trained and mentored the camp staff for 3-D archery. Over 70,000 scouts from around the world have passed through the 3-D archery program. He developed a second archery program, and is working on a third, at other BSA adventure bases. Receiving the BSA’s highest volunteer service award (the Silver Beaver Award), his merit badge courses and 3-D archery courses have been responsible for planting bowhunting seeds in the minds of many thousands of young people, who have experienced the fun of shooting the bow and arrow and have learned about the ethics and responsibilities of hunting.
