Well got permission to hunt on the side of the river the turkeys went last weekend and this morning they didn't come that way... Later in the morning I went to the other side on public ground and found some and then had my hunt ended when a couple people shot the jake that was on its way into my set up. I'm not to mad though because it was the kids first turkey and I'm hoping for a tom. Now for the rest of my season I will have to fight the shotgun hunters for the public ground

Still have twelve days to wait. Haven't had much time to post as the spring is my busiest time of the summer.

Pulled my cards today and put my dekes in the blind. I think there are 4 mature toms in the area. This video is from my blind. Sorry about the lack of a time stamp. I inadvertently turned it off. Duh. I can tell you this bird was there in the last couple days. 5 more days!

Well no bird for Me opening day

My boss decided to go with me at about noon on friday but couldn't leave till seven, that put us there at 10pm after a beer and chat with the land owners I think we got 3 hours of sleep lol

Got set up 70 yards off the roost a hour before light and there were 4 toms and sounded like 2 more further out. They didn't gobble to much on the roost and it was like a delayed reaction when I would do soft tree yelps, they would gobble 20 seconds after.
Before shooting light one of the further out ones was on the ground but wouldn't commit and strutted at 50 yards. I didn't want to get to aggressive with him since I was sure the other ones would hit the ground and come right in. Thats when my boss showed his extra ordinary skill of yelping with a elk diaphragm, at least it was quite and maybe it sounds like a far of hen that has a cold? he was really really offended later when I mentioned it didn't sound good.
Any ways, the gobbler seen or heard some thing he didn't like and started to make his way off and then the other birds came off the roost to the wrong side of the creek!!
once they are over there I haven't been able to get them back and they make there way up the canyons.
We heard one back behind us and decided to go after it since the birds very rarely come back down to the bottom. We never did find him but did see a ton of deer in WhiteTail canyon.
Seen a few more through the day but its hard to make a move when they are up in the open country.
The evening I decided to set up the blind on the other side of the creek to intercept the birds coming back to roost and the boss wanted to go to the other roost area a ways up the creek.
About a hour before sunset I heard a shot and figured I would never hear the end of how great his elk call works!
I never seen or even heard a bird and meet up with him to see a really nice gobbler, 23lbs 10in beard, 1 1/8 spurs.
Turns out the elk call didn't work so he crawled in on the big dude and got him to raise his head with the elk call lol.
he has never called in a bird, every one has been spot and stalk. wonder why haha

So I plan on getting out there again and we also have a trip planned to Nebraska in may.

Sounds like you at least had fun! Why would anyone even try to use an elk call as a turkey call? That's funny.

On the note of mouth calls. I'm pretty disappointing in my new zink I got this year. I had the same one 2 years ago and loved it. It has the triangle on the top reed and it keeps folding back and sticking.

Much like lighted nocks, I think I'm gonna be done with "High end" diaphragms. I think the plain jane models from primos or hs strut are as good as any and cheaper.

On another note, my perfect dusting and strutting area is under 3" of fresh snow. That will not be good... I hope my blind did not collapse like the one that did about 3 years ago. I had a snow pole in it until this past Friday. I just didn't think it could snow again. What was I thinking?
