Arrow *Broadhead Sharpening*

I have had many requests for videos on BH sharpening and I want to do it, I just haven't got around to it yet. Well being it is 100* out, I thought today would be a good day to start on one portion.
This is a video on sharpening new or slightly dull replaceable blades, not really dull beat up blades, save that for another time.
I hope it helps all those who have expressed an interest and maybe we can get a sticky on this so more people see it and it doesnt get lost.

Nice video my friend. What I would really like to see is you using that Edge Pro that was in the background on video. That would probably determine whether I got one or not.

This is great timing-I was thinking of pm'ing you to see how you sharpened the heads and you beat me to it! What kind of leather is that and where can we get it along with the stropping compound?

Thanks!

I was thinking the same thing. No stone or alternate sharpener of any sort, just a piece of leather and some compound

Thanks for the time you put into this stuff. It's pretty much the way I do it too. I've only killed a turkey with the Slick Trick, but I'm going to take some whitetails with it and mine are shaving sharp. You're right the Lansky/Gatco holder is worth the money alone to strop blades. Those sharpeners Lansky/Gatco are great for hunters.

You're welcome, I hope that all your bh's will be shaving sharp. You can also do 2 blade (or single blade as some call them) such as Stingers, Sivler Flames, etc. I had a guy who brought some year old Stingers over and were used and all I did was what you saw in the video and they came out sharp, with no hones or stones used. When I use my hones, I use the leather to finish off the job. You can also do the same thing with knives to get them very sharp.
The strop compound I got at: http://www.woodcarvers.com/yellowstone.htm
The leather is from a welders jacket. I belt or some other good (no oil) leather will work. If you want a strop, you can get one here: http://woodcarvers.com/Strops1.htm

Swoosh, I normally dont sharpen on that portable table but on my work bench....did you take dramamine?

Riverghost, you ever use that T word again and I will SUE your sorry butt Andddd, I hope all the hogs near you wind you

Jeff, you gotta come to NJ to see that Edge Pro in action I just did Rick's knife and well I'll let him tell you how many stitches he got (he didnt go away, he cant type now )

Joey, when I get wound up, I can talk alot faster......

That is great... For years I have been using a smaller piece of leather but it seems like the bigger piece works alot easier..

Do you have to clean the leather after each session or do you simply continue using the same area and just put on fresh stopping compound? How much of the compound do you put on the leather?

Thanks.

Thumbs up

Jerry is right on with this stropping video. If you want REALLY sharp heads, you have to POLISH the edge and the burrs off. If done properly, the very edge of the blade will be almost mirror polished.

I know alot of guys think scary sharp means "rough sharp".... it doesn't. Scary sharp means they cut you without you even knowing it... and that's what a "polished sharp" edge will do. They are the type that just "nick" you and you bleed like a hemopheliac!

Also, from personal experience, a polished sharp edge will stay sharper MUCH MUCH longer than a rough sharp edge. A really good rough sharp edge is the edge you need to start polishing to get true scary sharp.

Jerry can take older blades with a rolled edge and polish them, taking most the burr off and laying the edge back over where it needs to be and suddenly they become very very sharp w/o hones.

Just takes a little time and the right tools and equipment.

BTW, you can also get pretty close to this same level of sharpness with the Lansky "fine hone" stone that's normally sold seperately. It's got the yellow handle and the stone is white as snow and feels slick as glass. A little oil on the stone and LIGHT strokes on both sides will yield similar results to Jerry's setup. FYI Jerry's setup is much faster IMO.

Good work Jerry!

Have you tride the Lansky "Polish" stone. Any idea how this compares to using a belt on your blades. I just bought a Polish stone for my lansky about a month ago and it seems to do a good job... However I'm always looking for a sharper blade.

What color is it? I have the diamond kit and bought the yellow "ultra fine" stone seperately. There is supposedly one other stone they make called the "sapphire" that's super duper ultra fine....

If the polish stone doesn't have the yellow handle, I haven't tried it. The ultra fine one is so smooth, it feels like polished marble or glass.

I'm sure it works VERY similar to the Ultra fine.... that should do the trick!!! Remember... many LIGHT strokes to each sid to get the burr off and polish the edge!!! That's the trick!!

On my Gatco, I use 2 hones, the diamond (fine) hone and the ceramic hone. Then I finish off with the leather strop. I also have the Edge Pro sharpening system and once you get the knack of it, it is sweet !

Great video Jerry.
I'm glad that isn't the table you usually use. I thought that you should hang a sign that reads " If the sharpening table is a rockin', don't come a knockin'. I could cut my hand off if disturbed. "
You are one of the good guys on AT. You keep on helping your fellow bowhunters.
But seriously; we have to talk about that T-shirt.
Nice visor though.
