That's one bad bird! If you've ever gotten up close to an adult eagle... they are HUGE! I definately wouldn't want to tangle with one that's for sure!!!

Why wouldn't the eagles talons be open? It looks like the foxes feet are covered by snow.

I am a licensed falconer, and I can assure you, that is not a photo-shopped photo.....

That appears to be an immature female golden eagle (judging from foot-size and wing feathers/tail feather color)....she has just smacked that fox off the deer carcass....she made no attempt to bind (clutch) to him.....that is why her feet are in the open position......

I can assure everyone that if her intent was to kill that fox instead of bump him off that carcass, that fox would be laying under her, as dead as that deer is.....

Female golden eagles can kill adult coyotes weighing 30-40 lbs.....a 12-15 lb. red or grey fox is no trouble at all......

Look at the shadows and light levels on the foxes rear paws and the falcons head. It's not photoshopped. Also look at the shadows on the snow and the flakes that are in the air. Why must there always be somebody that discounts an extremely unique photo? This does happen in nature my friend... It's called the food chain.

That is about the dumbest statement I have heard in awhile. Have you ever walked in the snow?? Do your feet not sink into it?

That is an awesome pic. I saw a bald eagle kill a baby antelope a few years ago while my brother and I were fishing here in northern New Mexico.

Definitely photoshopped.

- The edges of the fox against the rest of the image is more blurred than other edges in the image.
- The spot on the fox's shoulder has been retouched and smoothed over.
- The fox has a brown rope around his hind leg.

Not that my eyes are that good. I had to load it into photo editor and zoom 4x.

Obviously your eyes REALLY aren't that good. The blur around the fox is powder snow that has been kicked up. Better get some thicker glasses there man.

That is a great and very unique photo. As far as being digitally manipulated, I don't see any obvious manipulation at first glance. I am not a photoshop expert or guru but I do work with it a LOT due to my photography business. What amazes me when folks start describing why they KNOW a photo has been manipulated is the reasons they state are often not what experts do look for when trying to determine whether or not a photo has been manipulated. Many of the reasons given by critics can be explained by things other than manipulation - such as the "blur" around the fox but not the rest of the image. First off, the image is not really sharp to begin with. Secondly, it would not be unusual for the depth of field (DOF - the depth of focus in the image) to be very shallow in an image like this one. If the photographer was using a "fast" lens, like one with an F-stop of 2.8, it would be easy for the bird to be in focus and the fox to be "soft" due to a very shallow DOF. Could it have been digitally manipulated? Sure, there are some who are good enough at this you would not be able to tell.

Hey- so am I! 21 years worth of falconry under my belt and 12-something years as a pro raptor biologist.

Don't think that's photo-shopped, either. Agree with your assessment. I bumped a golden off a freshly killed Swift/Kit fox a few years ago, but those are lots smaller and I bet we both know falconers who hunt coyotes with their goldens (not to mention the Mongolians who use Berkut goldens on wolves...).

Magpies would be right there in the situation. In fact, part of one of my studies was to follow radio-tagged golden eagles around and then document how long it took for pies to show up after a kill. Usually something like 2 minutes. Out here on the ranch, it's nothing to see pies, ravens, and coyotes all squabbling over a carcass.

Cool picture anyway.

Looks photoshopped to me too. Fake 'scenario' if you ask me-just doesn't make sense.

Why is the fox's ass end up in the air like that? The eagle's talons obviously aren't holding onto it. Is it kicking the eagle? I would think in real life the fox would duck or crouch down...or run? I don't get it.

How did the fox get to the kill? If he walked, wouldn't his prints be in the snow? Plus if he was eating on the carcass, I'd think there would be some torn up snow lying around. The snow around the carcass just looks too 'clean'. No bits or pieces of meat...it looks like the carcass has been laying there undisturbed for awhile.

I'm not an expert, and I really don't care either way. It's just my opinion it looks fake.

Come on guys, clearly the eagle isnt attacking the fox!! Its the fox doing a double back leg kick getting the eagle of his meat. Look at his mouth. He is clearly yelling "KIAAAA" as he attacks.

Awesome pic either way!! I had the pleasure of having a bald eagle land on a branch 10 yards away from me while hunting last saturday. Truly a majestic animal.

Could you post your pic of the rope, I don't have those programs and don't see it. Either way, cool pic. I had the pleasure of getting to see an eagle's nest recently while fishing on the River and was utterly amazed!! It was literally the size of like a volkswagon.....such neat creatures...

That's an immature golden eagle. The adult fox would weigh more than the eagle. The fox is dead and was hanging in that position while it froze solid. Have you guys noticed the wingspan on the bird is in no way in proportion to the deer? That would be about a 12 foot wingspan, the wing tip feathers are as long as the entire ribcage. Saw this photo in July.

As far as the digital manipulation goes it isn't obvious just as whitedog1 has said. You make some good points Mertz but if you put this into photoshop and blow it up, the image has some real problems just as listed by Whitedog1. One that Whitedog1 didn't mention is the carcass in the center of it has a completely fogged out area that is unlike the places where the bones are present. It may be a good picture that was not well manipulated or a plain picture that was manipulated very well. I looked for meta data and there was none. That could be the work of a real pro or the oversight of a real amateur.

Just my 2 cents.

I really enjoy doing research on so called P.S. images

And some people just like to be negative, or make them-self's seem smarter.

Some people might look for a new line of work

All I can say is, if it's fake, Pekka Komi P.S. all 5 images in the series he shot in Finland, It's REAL.

If you didn't shoot it or make it or there to know one way or another try to think about how you want to be perceived by others with your so called knowledge on the validity of said image.

I'm not trying to be a smart alex, it just seems that some people are not given the credit due for there ability to shoot a incredible image or animal.

Images can be completely faked and there is NO WAY you can see it on your monitor or in photo-shop.

Try this, manipulate a photo, print it, scan it, you will NOT see those so-called tell tale signs of manipulation. and that's just one of many ways to do it.

Have a nice day

P.S. here's a bonus video for ya Falconer's
