Ok how do you guys come up with a number when judging a target that you cant see the ground in front of it?I shot 2 shoots this weekend and had probably a 3rd of the targets like that.
When getting yardage without seing the whole animial, I try to get the midway distance. Once this is determined double it and you shoule be with in 1 yard if your mid way yardage is correct. Hope this helps.
Use the farthest object out just before the ravine or whatever is causing the land loss that you're confident about, then judge the rest. If you have a real fast bow, this will tend to mitigate the problem........like a black Marble Commander that I bought from you........ How's it going Lee?...Sounds like some of your shots didn't hit exactly where you expected, eh? P.S. The Slayer will also do the trick nicely.....lain:.
If you shoot enough 3-d you will get a sense for how far the target is by just looking at it..... it has to do with the amount of depth you see and it also is by learning what the targets size is at different yardages..... I also look at objects at eye level all the way to the target..... tree trunks, branches, anything..... I do this on targets that have no ground, I also do this on targets that have ground to learn what the distances look like..... learning what yardages that you can no longer see definition in the target or tree bark, etc, with your naked eye can help, although this is really affected by sunlight, shade, shadows etc.......
Shot that course agin with my boys today. Shot 226 from Unlimited, not too bad cosidering I was trying to keep one eye on them and shoot with the other. Shot about 5-6 14's from the hunter stake today as well.
Nice shooting with ya James!
thanks guys. There is some good help there.I was on a roll today then we had a wolverine target that had logs quite aways in front of it and I looked at it several times and kept comming up with 36 it turned out to be 41.
Thanks for the help
Jim...called you 'Lee' in my post...got you mixed up with another AT'er.....sorry about that......:embara:....no more :darkbeer: tonight for me....ukey:.
The thing that works for me the best is seeing the target at that yardage. Go to your local range without your bow. Just take your range finder and a score card. Judge the target by just looking at the target, not the ground. Then judge it by looking at the ground. Then range it. I keep track of what I judge it for and what it realy is on the score card. If you do this enough you will get a mental picture of what a target looks like at a certain distance. You can also use things on the target like the white part around a deers eyes. If you can see the white part at 32yds but you loose it at 35yds that will get you real close. You just have to get a picture of the targets in your mind at different distances. So your brain will have the information to tell you how far it is.
I had some revenge at Goochland today....................I shot a 270 ASA round!!!!!!! I was shooting really well! Good shooting with all of you!
When the grounds gone its very hard....The first thing I try to do is walk down the main trail both ways to try & get a better veiw....just don't advance towards the target!
Try to find something off to the side thats the same distance & judge that.
If thats a no go...I get the half way point at eye level & double it...I try to make sure that I judge the half point VERY close...when you double it your errors compound.
Then judge the farthest ground you can judge as a check.
If I don't have a very good feeling about the range...I shoot the center 10.
For years everytime i went out for a walk or scouting in the woods or hunting i brought my range finder. I would range everything in site. First i would make my guess and write it down and then range it and write it down. I have probably ranged over 1000 items. I no longer carry my range finder with me except when i am coyote hunting and thats because i may get a 400 yard shot. But it has become like second nature knowing how far an item is away now. When we do our outdoor 3d league i am the only one that does not carry a rangefinder with me. Under 50 yards and under i am plus or minus 1 yard over 50 yards i would say i am within 2 yards either way. Practice makes perfect. Write them down also. It helps keep you honest and will show your progress.
Some of our local expert yardage " shoot winners " sneak out onto the course prior to the shoot and laze / record the yardages. Other yardage experts wear the cell phone ear piece and have " non shooting helpers " in the crowd that range the targets for them and communicate the ranges. Still others have group discussions at the stake...
I stopped shooting for prizes at guessing game shoots due to all the cheating. I like shooting on marked yardage courses because they are more fair, and I can compete with a normal Bow, Arrow using normal weight and speed...
I always pick a 20yd marker then judge it in 10yd increments to target. Then I use the 10yd method at a time.
