How Old Does Your Child Have to Be To Hunt

In Nebraska they have to be 12 years old, so that means my twin boy's have to wait 4 more years. Well at least they can go along with me.

That is a terrible law. I killed my first deer with a .410 gauge shotgun 000 buckshot at 15 yards. Dropped her in her tracks and i was only 4. By age 12 i had killed well over 40 deer. Kansas kids are deprived.....until that get 12 and then they have all the monster bucks that can handle

We don't have minimum age limits to hunt in Texas. You just have to pass a Hunter Safety course once you're about 12. My daughter was 10 when she killed her first deer.

In my former state of Pa, you have to be 12 and pass a hunter safety course. I live in Ohio now, and as long as you can pass a hunter safety course, it doesn't matter how old you are.. I like that law better

Here's my daughter's first bowkill when she was 12.

In Michigan, you can bowhunt and hunt small game when you are 12 and have passed hunters safety. To hunt deer with a gun you have to be 14, and have passed hunters safety.

I was 10 when I took my first doe.

    Right after the shot.

    After finding her.

    Getting ready to gut her.

Got my first grouse on the same trip!

I have that first picture, of me holding the .44, blown up and framed on my wall. I'll never forget that moment. I can remember the recoil, turning and looking at my dad, and him snapping the picture.

That is nuts having to wait until you are 12 years old. I killed my first deer with a gun at 8 years old. I had been going hunting with my dad since I was about 4 years old I think. Heck back then I would sometimes be up before him to go hunting..hahaha

Here in NH, at 16 you need your own license and hunter safety. Before that, you can hunt with an 18+ year old licensed adult and have to be under their "direct control", this can be any age.

we also have youth turkey weekend and youth deer weekend when only the kids can hunt, escorted by a licensed adult.
My boys are going on their first turkey hunts this year (first for me to, thank god for hunting partners who know what they are diong). They have been deer hunting for a couple of years.

In Wisconsin you have to be 12 years old and pass Hunters Safety. Until you are 16 you have to hunt with an adult that is within viewing or voice distance.

In Utah, you have to be 12 and also pass a hunter safety course.

I was 13 before I got to go out and got a nice forked horn mulie. My stepfather didn't hunt, and I went with a friend and his dad. That was an experience I will never forget, even after all these years.

I think in my reminiscing I strayed from the question. In Oregon the kids have to be 12 to hunt big game also.

My friend was allowed to get his green card and hunt at the age of 8. I used to go with my dad a lot when I was 9 or 10. Now we are both 18 and hunting is the one thing we love to do. We learned at an early age and we are thankful for that. That law is pretty stupid if you ask me.

In California you have to pass the hunters safety course, 5th grade level, to hunt small game.

But you can't hunt big game till your 12.

I like Texas' rules. Let the parents decide when a yougster is ready, not the beaurocrats (spelling).

Looks like we'll be out in Texas for a hunt next year!

    Hear hear Gman.

In MO you have to pass hunters safety, but the decision of age should be up tp the parents.

I have always stressed safety and muzzle discipline with my kids, even when they were learning to shoot BBguns in the garage.

They knew any infraction meant an immediate end to the shoot and a "suspension" from shooting for a period of time. The parents are the only ones who can make the judgement when they are ready.

There are ALOT of adults I wouldn't share a hunt with from a safety standpoint, archery or firearms.

Pa. you need to be 12 years old and pass a hunter saftey corse. But you also must hunt with a Adult with in arm's length or at least sight. until you are 16. What about other states the kids can hunt when they are younger but must they be with an adult?
