How does this number guessing thing work?

http://www.regiftable.com/RegiftingRobinPopUp.html

This is really odd how it works. Someone explained how these things do it once but I cannot remember. Anyone know?

Looks like the answer is always whatever is in box #9. This answer is also repeated every 9 boxes all over the board. Pretty strange how the math works out like that.

For those that wanna ruin the mystery... read on....

It tells you to think of a two-digit number (e.g. 12). Then it tells you to subtract from that number each digit (e.g. 12-1-2=9). You will notice that no matter how many times you try it, you will always have a resulting number that is divisible by 9 (9,18,27,36,etc).

This is done because you are subtracting the number in the ones digit (2 in this case) which leaves you with a multiple of 10. Then you will subtract the number in the tens place which will result in a multiple of 9, because for every TEN you have, you subtract ONE...hence TEN minus ONE equals 9. (e.g. 20-2=18; 50-5=45)

So once you are assured of a multiple of 9, you will also note that each multiple of 9 has the same gift (or other answer) in the spot (e.g. 9=ball, 18=ball, 27=ball, etc.). The trick (with any trickery type of thing such as this) is to change the items listed each time. If you get a ball every time, you might be suspicious, but since the site automatically changes from a ball one time, then a scarf, then a phone, and so on, it seems as if they are actually reading your mind...
