Venison comes from the Latin "venatio" which means "I hunt." Hunters live by the credo "venatio ergo esito" "I hunt therefore I eat." In my family, my daughter and and I hunt in order to provide nutritious meat for the family. When we sit down to eat that meat, it is my daughter and I that are eating venison; the rest of the family is eating deer meat. It is only venison when you have personally harvested it with your bow and arrow, rifle or muzzleloader (or all 3 in my case). When you sit down to eat of God's bounty, your heart is filled with gratitude for the deer God provided. We who hunt know that it is more than deer meat to us; it is venison. It is received with a grateful and humble heart.

Great post and some great info that I'm sure a lot of hunters didn't know.
I will admit I didn't know that before reading this.

I too enjoy my venison.
Nothing like eating a good ole tenderloin from a deer that I killed to support the family :thumbs_up

Great post, I knew I should have paid more attention in High School Latin

Thanks for the info. Now I must go and start my mess of elk venison burger so my wife and boys can have elk meat burgers. :thumbs_up Look up what "mess" used to mean in the old days.

Not very many on here from ancient Rome, or ancient Latium. We are from America where venison is meat from a deer used as food.

Very good post. Probabaly one of the best I have seen or read on this site.

Very nice!!!!!!!:thumbs_up:thumbs_up

Nice lil tidbit of info However, I tend to agree with Stanley, We arent in Rome or any other Latin country we are in America where It dont matter what you call it , Its meat from a deer & I like mine Grilled, Stewed,& BBQed.

Next thing you know Ill have to press 1 for english before I post.

From seeing just about as many cooking shows as hunting shows, I can tell you, that if you are eating deer meat in any and I mean ANY resturant, it is called Venison. Elk is elk, buffalo is Bison, antelope is antelope.

I have had bison bergers and man they are great tasting. I have had bunches of venison. I would give just about anyting to have a nice thick ELk ribeye fom an elk either me or my brother has harvested.
