We are buying a house on some property and want to set up a target.

So, under ideal conditions how far would a ~325gr arrow traveling at 295fps out of the bow travel? I have almost 500 feet to play with. I just want to make sure I can't launch on into the neighbors pasture.

I thought there was a formula for that but I can't seem to find it.

I'd say if you miss the target, easy. At 295fps you are covering over half of your property in a second, so I'd make a really nice arrow target house or something to keep your arrows off the neighbors land.

Don't miss your target-------simple LOL. Is there a tree line? Chance of making through a tree line are slim. I have a lot 409' deep. Am I shooting that distance--------NO-------why would I and what purpose would it give me------nothing. Besides you would have to have to be shooting a very upward angle on your bow to launch an arrow that far. Of course you always need to beware of your surroundings. If your concerned build a big back stop.

The trouble u would probably have if u were to miss is the arrow skipping off the ground. The arrow would hit the ground after a short distance but a lot of times the arrow will skip across the ground or hit something like a rock and send it flying a couple hundred feet.

if you arent carefull....all the way to your wallet

Well, you have time how long it takes for an arrow dropped to hit the ground then multiply that by the fps

Arrow dropped from 4 feet takes .68 secs to hit the ground. .68 X 295fps = 200.6 feet (assuming level aiming point.) But as soon as you point upwards, it gets tricky.

The distance record for a standard style Compound bow was set by Kevin Strother (yes, *THAT* Kevin Strother) at 1.16km as well as fastest FPS at some insane-o speed of 580+ fps. There's a thread somewhere here on AT where Kevin himself talks about both records.

Some guy by the name of Don Brown did nearly the same distance with a recurve. 1.145km.

Harry Brown has the record for Crossbow and Footbow at 1.8km.

Yeah your right but it took 3 days. That's about 61fps(I think). You should make sure your cams are in time brother.

The trouble with the OP's shooting arrangment will be if he even has a loop break, BT go off prematurly, or something else when he is pointing above the target.

Well, I don't sky the bow when I draw. It just that stuff happens sometimes.

I'm just trying to figure out what "might" happen.

This may be a good practical answer. Assuming you don't have one get launched while drawing the bow back with the arrow pointed at a 30 degree upward angle. Firing normallly from a level bow, I wouldn't think even a ground ricochet is going to travel more than 100 yards. At least I haven't seen one go further than that.

Our State Division of Wildlife built a public archery range here a couple of years ago. They did quite a bit of research into the design, which is liability driven. They have a fenced in zone back to 100 yards from the firing line.

Heh. Thanks for the correction guys! Goof of the fingers...or brain...or both.

Club I used to belong to had 3D tournament once with the targets set up around 3 sides of an open field. You'd walk around the edge, shooting at targets set up in the woods. The field was probably about 300 yards long. Me and a couple buddies were on the first side and had had just walked to the 4th target when for some reason I turned around and was looking back at the way we had come. In the ground maybe 30' up our back trail was an arrow sticking up. I walk back to pick it up thinking how could we have missed that. Just happened to glance across the open field and see 3 guys who had just finished shooting taking a short cut back.

You guessed it. Someone decided to see how far their bows would shoot across the open field, not thinking it would make it across. Two of the bows didn't. The 3rd was a speed bow and the arrow had come from that culprit. All three should have known better, especially since one of them taught the state course for bowhunters safety!!!! :mg:
