Since I can't use the search function (Thanks AT), I thought I would ask what are some of the better cover scents out there. I've used Primos XP before with pretty good success. I've used the Scent Killer Gold and was busted nearly every time does were up wind of me so that's out.

What are some of the better ones youve used?

scent away was tested to be the most effective then it was primes silver xp. Scent away changed their formula to scent away max this year. not sure if it is as effective as the original formula

Wash your clothes in whatever scent control products you like air dry then put them in a zipper lock bag filled with fresh acorns and leaves, dress on site use ever calm on side and bottom of boots

I follow a similar regiment. I have heard some scary stories about rotting leaves containing something that made folks sick so I use scent wafers. They are a little pricey right now but they are normally cheaper after the season or on line. My clothes have been in a tote with sect wafers since the end of last season (Jan2). Just as Honda suggests don't get dressed until you get there. I may take this to the extreme but I strip naked at the vehicle and put on my hunting clothes. I do not put anything on that did not come out of that tote. Once I am dressed I use Scent Away Max.

Before I head out I shower with a scent free anti bacterial soap. No matter the weather I drive to my hunting area in shorts and a t-shirt or maybe a sweat shirt. I want as little odor on me from the house as possible.

I am sure folks will say all of this is BS but I shot my first deer, a 2.5 year old buck at 4yds and only 10' off the ground. On top of that I was down in the bottom of a valley, if i was putting off any deer offending odor it was right there all around me. To top things off he walked in from 15yds right towards my stand. People can say what they want, I KNOW this stuff and this regiment works for ME.

Are you talking about cover scents or scent eliminators? Cover scents are a waste of time IMO. A deer can smell several scents at once so there is really no covering IMO. Scent eliminators probably don't hurt anything but I truely believe they don't do much. Maybe reduced your scent a little but certainly not eliminating it. Just my 2 cents

I am not a biologist so I cannot refute what you are saying. However, what I am doing works. I do not pretend to know why all of this works for me when it doesn't for other people. One thought is that I am replacing any odor on my clothes or me with the cover scents I am using. I keep my head shaved during deer season, I am particular about what I eat and I always shower with the anti bacterial soap. Maybe I am giving off so little human odor it practically doesn't exist. I know it sounds like some sort of vodoo but it is the only way I can explain getting as close to deer as I do.

Like I said I can refute what you and others have said but I also cannot explain my success if you are right about cover scents.

I carry a couple apples in my pocket. When I get to the woods I crush them with my boots and release apply goodness with every step. My dad goes a different direction and looks for a nice pile of whitetail feces to rub his boots in.

I wash all my hunting gear in baking soda & air dry. As for cover scents i use Ever Calm on my boots during the walk in & then around my tree once i get to the stand. I have been doing this for many years & have zero complaints.

No need to explain anything that works for you. If it works keep doing it imo

Thanks for understanding and some times I wish i could make sense of some of this stuff. Very often I do something like all of this because it makes sense to me. Then 6 months later I read something in a book or magazine that sheds some light on why it worked out. I think all this scent stuff will continue to be somewhat of a mystery though.

I may use a earth wafer now and again...other than that I stick with the shampoo's, deodorants, hair gel's, and sprays(unscented) and Sportwash for the clothes.....

You cannot cover your scent. There is no maybe. You can not do it. All you can do is keep the foreign and bacterial odors as low as possible. The scent sprays kill 99.9 % of "replicated" human odor. Thats probably true. The problem with that is that's in a lab. A live human is always producing scent. Putting a scent wafer, cedar branch, or apple on you does nothing.

If you could cover scent then a buck could never pick up the scent of another deer on the ground. The scent of the leaves, dirt, corn stalks, and so on are much stronger than the foot step thats an hour old. Deer and dogs can pick our scents on the molecular level. It doesn't matter if one is stronger. Its like putting 10 black and 1 white marble on the table and thinking the black ones will hide the white one because there are more black ones.

Weather plays a big part on how well an animal can smell. Anyone thats hunted with hounds or bird dogs will back me up on this. Some days they can pick up on a scent very easy and others not very well at all.

We really appreciate you posting so we know for certain how much smarter you are than all of us. Imagine so much knowledge, probably a PHD in biology, and you took the time to set all of us idiots straight. Now I can sleep better tonight having been enlightened by your great wisdom. Someday I hope I can be as brilliant as you so I can be as narrow minded and condescending.

I would share with you that we don't have scent glands in our feet and deer do. I would also tell you that deer have a strong odor all the time. I would also tell you that a doe in heat has a very strong odor. I would also point out that even though a doe in heat has a strong smell bucks have to wander all day to find them. I would also tell you that deer also find each other through vocalizations. I would tell you all of that but I am sure you know that already. After all anyone who KNOWS something cannot possibly work for someone else must know everything about deer and deer hunting.

I have heard that Chanel N°5 works very well.
At least is smells better for about the same price and the deer can not tell the difference anyway.
