I always carry Halls, there is only so much you can do to muffle an actual cough

I do cough drops and not worry about the smell or just plain water ... the worst is when you swallow wrong or you get that "tickle" in your throat when your trying to be quiet and it is dead still.....you just about gag as you try to suppress it, you try to hold it in, your eyes bulge and veins pop.... then you explode with a cough that scares critters away for MILES ...we've all done that.......lol......btw, Ive had that happen as deer were under me..... lol....

As far as actually muffling the cough, I always cover my mouth with my gloves and it seems to help with the sound. I have been battling a sinus infection for about a month and last saturday morning I had a pretty bad coughing spell and even had to blow my nose while in the stand. Within 10 minutes of all of that commotion I had a 4.5 year old buck and doe come within 5 yards of my tree... I have even carried a handkerchief with me to muffle the cough... It does help.

Cough drops. About 10 minutes after the last one wears off I put a new one in.

I quit smoking. Haven't coughed since. Cough in your elbow. I've heard so many animals in the woods cough like humans. You'll be fine.

My cameraman has had a sinus issue for 2 weeks. He has been coughing every time out. I have watched deer around us ignore his coughs over and over, including some nice bucks within 20 yards. It has been quite a surprise, but enlightening. I mean...they don't even look towards us.
I got pneumonia on a spring turkey hunt last year. I just got to where I buried my face in a hoodie I carried just to cough in. Either turks don't care either, or it muffled it good enough because I had fits while birds where in the same field as us, within 60 yards and we still managed to get them in and double.

Trying to hold a cough can be dangerous, especially if you stomach is a little out of whack.

I cough the opposite way into my grunt call. Kind of then sounds like a wheeze. It's not a perfect fix, but may muffle some.

Water or cough drops. Either Ricola or Fisherman's Friend. I don't worry about the smell.
