Since you mention your son, I am asumming fixed stands and not climbers, do not use para-cord, to thin and hard to get a grip with it

I use the same thing as a life line, nice and thick, that way with gloves, cold hands etc no issues..

Im thinking of going a little larger diameter of rope this year, have been using paracord but it gets really tangled easily.
wrap it with a series of figure 8's like in the picture below. It won't tangle.

OP, I just use Paracord. If you want retractable just get a retractable dog leash.

I use a Doyle's hunting hoist. Excellent in every way except weight. Its spring loaded , so it lets out as needed going up and retracts as needed going down. No tangles ever, quiet....but it is bulky and has a little weight. Just clips on my pack.
been using this for years, the nylon ribbon one, i wouldn't use a regular rope again...

I use one called The Strapper. I'm not sure if they are still available, or not. I like the one inch web strap vs a string or cord. Much easier on your hands when raising and lowering your bow.

Yes they still sell them, I bought two last year and I have been using them for many years. Two things they offer, one, absolutely no tangles, and two, unlike rope your bow won’t spin with the Strapper.

yes I am getting my son used to a ladder stand right now, the paracord was a little thin for him, I know i could go to a bigger piece of rope ( I'm all about keeping things simple also) but I figured we would try something new. still searching for a strapper, the couple places I found so far are sold out. thanks again guys.

^^^Mule tape got plenty of it, find a AT&T lineman they throw away hundreds of feet daily. I still have a strapper but use a thirdhand bow holder on my climber.

I’ve been using a 20’ rope with brass spring latches tied on each end. That way I can hook one end on my vow and the other to my belt loop very quickly. Has been working great for me, as a one armed archer, for 30 years. Also doubles as a drag line too.

I have used a 25' length of 1/4" braided nylon. It doesn't tangle and wraps up rather small and neatly. I tie it onto the stand and bow before ascending and descending climber. It doubles as a drag rope at times. Same "lucky rope" has been with me for close to 40 years of hunting.

Paracord also large loop on end slip through limbs & hook under limb butt, short so off the ground about 6", works great cheap & strong.

Doyles Hunting hoist

Love the hookup system, It is just clipped on my HSS so it goes where I go.. I have used it to pull up stands and let stands down, Don't recommend that without gloves...Oh the burn... But for bows it is no brainer... Thus I don't need another line, as they get tangled hanging in the wind when you aren't there, on the tree, just the safety line.

With the clip you can put your pack and bow or gun and lunch all hooked up at one time for one easy pull to the stand.
