I like feathers for the sole purpose that they lay down nicely when going through an animal as opposed to vanes hitting hide, flesh, and bones and offering resistance going by those objects in the quest for complete arrow penetration.

More concerned with clearance than weight
OK, I haven't have any problems with that..
I tried ICE 4 fletch year a go and they wasn't enought with fixed.
Fly straight 20-25m then curved down right. U could see that when it started.
With 3 fletch Blazer or Max Stealth no problem of any kind to get fixed/field points to hit same spot at 50m.

My goal is made most forgiving hunting arrow what's possible with fixed blade.

i use a 4 fletch for everything . i like to use the smallest big vane or the biggest small vane :)
i like to keep my side profile down to help with cross wind effect.
if you go 4 fletch, you can use a lower profile vane, and have more surface area then a 3 fletch
hi profile vane. but still have great broadhead control.
i've had good luck with - Blazer X2 1.865 x .465 x 4.8 gr. - in 4 fletch
->>>>---------------> AAE Pro Max 1.70 x .460 x 4.9 gr. " / use the primer pen.
->>>>--------------->VaneTec Swift 2.88 x .450 x 7.5 gr. " / a little heavier
for last 2 years i have been using:
->>>>------------> VaneTec V Maxx 2.50 x .430 x 5.5 gr. "
all set with approx. 2 degree right off set, with a right helical.
you get the idea. make it your own & have fun with it :)
setting your own arrows up, is a hobby all in its self.
if i was smart enough , i'd post some pic's of the arrows i just put together. they LOOK & FLY - AWESOME :)

Love these 2" Rayzr feathers guiding a Magnus Black Hornet Ser Razor Head. Elk season in AZ starts 9/13! I added a 75 grain brass insert and along with the feathers moving my FOC forward I'm seeing excellent penetration and accuracy. All I need now is a willing BULL!

First 4 fletch set-up I tried used vanetec 2.88 like other posters and they seemed to fly great, but I have a couple arrows that will spiral beyond 30 yards. It's most likely something I did, or maybe the shaft, but I'm going to try some 2 and 3 inch feathers for broadheads, and I bought some Blazer x Vanes I'm going to try on my 23 series shafts. That being said, I just like tinkering with stuff(probably to my detriment).

Having bowhunted & tournament shooting since 1956 I've tried it all. Basically I see little difference in control with vane/feather size with our modern day materials. I've used blazers, Van tecs in vanes & 2", 2 1/2" & 3" in feathers (Razors & Parabolic). 3 fletch & four of both. I have shot a 3 blade 125gr BH 45 years now. ALL the fletch has done a great job. I prefer a 3" parabolic, off set 3 fletch for my compound though I have used a 4" shield, helical 3 fletch a few times. My son uses a low profile vane, 3 fletch (Orange dip, black vane)3 blade 125gr fixed. Hes using them again this year & I'm using a 3" Red Parabolic 3 fletch feather. If you do 4 fletch, use a 2" parabolic feather. More forgiving if you make a mistake. If you worry about vane or feather noise, your over thinking. I've built arrows all my life & for my shop/lanes (1964 thru 1982) & 8 family archer/bowhunters now. You don't need 4 but then it's fun switching things up just to see.
