Been researching this topic on AT, and found good info on shot placement and ideas on handling buck fever/moment o' truth jitters. I've also been practicing with my kit, and getting comfortable out to 40 yards.

Now, I'd like some practical tips to make sure I don't mess this hunt up when I actually head out next week....I don't know what I don't know, so sorry for not being more specific about what I'm asking for. Just want to make sure I drop one of these when the time comes!

Let those heavy arrows fly

Yessir, using Gold Tip Hunter XTs around 9gpi with 125 Wasp fixed broadheads. I've always seemed to prefer heavier arrows anyway, even though they drop. I really like the Nugents, but those drop a lot!

Reading your thread title I'm assuming some of your hunting will be done at night and if so I'm assuming a predator / green light will be used to spot hogs. I would suggest that if using a light on your person (mounted on your bow or coming from you) don't flash the light by turning it on immediately. Cover that light with a few fingers, turn it on, and slowly spread your fingers letting out more light. Even though pigs aren't supposed to see these waves of light I have busted a few hogs with a bright green flash. Since moving to the method I've just mentioned I have not busted hogs on my night hunts.

Just thought I'd throw a technical piece of advise out for ya. I also agree with heavy arrows, good FOC and do you and the hogs a favor, shoot a fixed blades cut on contact. That last bit is just my opinion and I know opinions vary widely on the topic but I have had much better results shooting quality fixed blades over some of the top mechanicals.

Get out there and have some fun man. Good luck!

I use a hha sight with a blue light shining on the fiber just enough to see pin and peep opened enough to not block view. I'm assuming the feeders have lighting around them.i'f not attach a hog light as stabilizer, Shot placement, shot placement and like was mentioned enjoy, it's a lot of fun, I'm going again in February.

Also one last thing, if your hunting at night I would recommend a low powered red headlamp that you can point directly downward. This will illuminate your peep and make it much easier to shoot. The red light should not be noticable by the pigs

Bow mounted light
Don’t hit them with said light all At once do
The finger thing like above or shine it above them and bring it down slowly.
Sight light really low power it won’t take you long to figure out why low power.
Learn to shoot without a peep or get one of the glow in the dark ones they work really good.
Know the vitals of pig
You want close shoots.
Put your big boy pants on because a group of hogs that big like in your picture will make sounds that will make the hair on your arms stand up.

You'll find out quick you won't be shooting anywhere NEAR 40 yards at night. That's a waste of time practicing that. What you need to do is practice at night right now......it's much different than in the day. Animals seem bigger and the distance is super deceiving.

I don't use a peep at night (or in the day) and that makes hunting at night 100 times easier. I stuff wax in my LED so that I can barley see the pins glow and that keeps the pins from washing out the target. Otherwise if you have a bright pin in your face you won't be able to see a black fidgeting hogs kill zone very easy at 12 yards let alone 40.

Get a black hog 3D target or a black block target and get out in your yard at night and work these issues out. Nothing is worse than having pigs everywhere and then watching them run off as you try to prepare in the field.

Last you are much better off putting a motion activated LED green light at the stand. They get use to it but IMHO they never get use to lights on the bow coming on out of the blue.....that has never worked well for me.

This 100%.
Since we hunt hogs all year long with almost all of it being at night almost all of the practice shooting we do is at night. When we bring along our buddies who shoot in the daytime they always struggle making quality shots at night. It is very different but I believe it makes you a better archer learning to shoot without all the visual references you have in the daytime ..you have to have very consistent form to be able to hit your anchor points and be lined up just right on your sites more by muscle memory.
Good luck on your hunt!! The sounds of night are very addictive when you have a group of hogs moving in on you!

With a full moon right now, a light should not be needed. Also I would not sit on the feeder as they get spokey, Find a trail where they are comig in and put a little corn down to stop them for 30 seconds

Have you watched the RF youtube videos where he cuts open the hogs to see their vitals, aim low and forward they're nothing like deer vitals they got NO NECK so spine dips different. Be prepared for a target that rarely stops , they are always stepping spinning or just moving while nibbling on corn. That lease we went to have solar hog lights that are left out on feeders and the hogs have got used to and make it a little easier to see the hogs. We use 150 - 200 gr coc heads, I used a 3 blade VPA and some of my family used Grizzleys and Buzzcuts.

Getting ready tohead out myself tonight for a sit. I'll be shooting my usual 58-lb dw, 28" dl, and 28" 525-gr Easton XX-75s with Rothaar Snuffers or Bear Razorheads. Works for me.

Like this:

Poke 'em good --this is the blood trail beginning where the hog was standing under the feeder:

The white lung tissue is the entry wound, and the broadhead on the arrow is pointing to the exit---best shot I've ever made on one. Hog went maybe 20 - 25 yds.

Thanks to all for the replies...this info is exactly what I was looking for...super informative.

I do have a light out there set up in between the two hog logs they are eating from. I'm using an ASF Lil' Squealer green LED light set at 200 lumens (low power) continuous...don't want to spook them with light coming on suddenly.

Was only shooting to 40 yards to force me to minimize bow movement when taking shots. I'll be shooting at those hogs from about 15 yards...pretty darn close! And I hope the noises from an approaching sounder aren't too spooky! I'll have Mr. 45 with me just in case, though.

I guess no one told you....or you didn't see the thread here a while back. You can't kill anything with aluminum arrows.

Make sure that when your hunt is over, you show us the harvest!
