Hi all, Ive got a question I used to shoot with a glove. I recently starting using a AAE elite tab. I like it but a have a couple questions. First when using a tab do you take a deeper finger grip. With the glove or bare handed I used just the tips of my fingers. With the AAE there is a string groove but it puts the string past mt first knuckle. Is that right? Or am i not using it correctly? If anyone has input a pic or a video on how to use this tab please let me know Thanks

Hi, here are a few photos me my AAE elite tab and finger position and where my fingers are on the string without the tab in the way.

top finger, string is in the first crease, middle finger string is just behind the first crease about 1/4 inch, third finger, string is in the crease.

what it looks like from the front

some people may use a deeper hook, i shoot pretty standard hook.

with tab, due to the camera angle being off to the side, from the front it looks like i have a much deeper hook due to the layers of leather, but its what i showed above. first finger crease, etc.

thanks the pics are very helpful

Hi, no. My string is alittle less than 1/4 inch from the metal plate.

plate position in my hand, about 1/4 inch past fingers

to be honest, the tab should not be noticeable in your hand when using. it shouldnt be large, wieldy, heavy, a big wad of stuff. My tab is un-intrusive, and wears like my arm guard and chest protector. I dont notice any of them when shooting. The tab should fit your hand well. Too small will move around and hit your hand/ thumb/ fingers after the shot. Too small wont protect your fingers well and will bunch your fingers in. To large and you wont get a good consistent hook each time. Too much leather will hinder the string and not let you get the same string hook feel each time.

Finger spacer should be just large enough to separate your fingers naturally and not have the bow string angle crush them in. My finger strap on the tab is loose. I could spin my tab around before or after the shot on my fingers. The tab has some movement in my hand when hook and drawing back so it can move with the string. So its not locked onto my finger. It is in my hand relaxed and just a part of it. It can move alittle forward or backward along my fingers as i hook the string and draw.

and have shot in spares.

Chris,

Yes, this has been super helpful. I made a simple leather finger tab when I bought my bow and recently upgraded to the same AAE Premier Tab (with the cheap leather, not cordovan). Looks like I am pretty much using it right. The AAE instructions said to put the string right up against the tab. I touch the string to the tab plate when I grab the string, but once I hook the string and pull back it ends up right where your picture shows.
Thank you again! Great information.

You're welcome.

Lastly, i have shot with the shelf and it is a great tool. I have not used a shelf for some years. I prefer the fine feel of the thinner tab rail. But if you do shoot without the shelf, i would recommend to grind down the straight edges so its more comfortable when you pull it against your jaw line. You can see in my photos, all my tabs have been rounded on the top. This will prevent any skin rash or skin burn areas from the metal tab part. I also cut the leather away from the top so the leather does not saw my jaw when releasing. You can see in the photos that the leather does not extend above the tab where the shelf would be. It is cut below it.

This all adds to the comfort of the tab when shooting.
