My buddy and I are gonna build a 10x10 deer shack, just wanted to get some input from guys who have built them. Some of this is probably overkill but I’d rather over do it. My main question is for the footing and posts. My plan is to use 10”-12” Sonotubes 4’ down and use 4x4 concrete post anchors in the wet concrete. Then attach the 4x4 to the platform using lag bolts.

I know this is pretty random and not really archery related, but just wanted to get some input from people who have done this.

Thanks

I use 5/4 deck plank for cross braces, work very well.
For legs, spend extra and go to a real lumber yard instead of big box. quality is better!

I plan on building one this Spring as well. 10’x10’ does seem huge. Due to terrain changes where I intend to place mine, 4x4 posts will work, if it needed to be taller, I’d go 6x6.

Any chance you could get ahold of power line poles? Our local electric co-op gives them to ranchers and people who request them if they have big projects. There is a lot of life left in some of those poles. They would be my choice if I were going to build an outhouse on stilts to hunt from.

I appreciate you saying this, great reminder! I have several 10’ long utility pole sections I cut when I build a bridge over a small creek. Utility company gladly parted with them from their scrap pile. I cut to length on location, loaded and hauled away.

4’in the ground with gravel base you think? I’ll find out if they give some away

I have a shadow hunter 5x6 that's 12' off the ground using 4x4's
I used Elevators post brackets. that is the key to kick out the legs.
Doesn't wobble one bit, I buried the posts 2' in ground and cross braced.
Rock Solid
10x10 is huge, so probably 6x6 for sure. but make sure you kick the posts out to sturdy it up.
Good luck
Make sure you ask for foundation treated if you bury it in the ground

Im trying to figure out if I need to bury the legs or not. But if I kicked out the legs I don’t have to right? How do you anchor if the legs are kicked out?

I buried them 2' and its fine. But Im in the woods and dont battle the wind
You can always mount them to the post base if they are kicked out a little and mount to the concrete.
Just have to notch to accommodate
I acquired a homemade elevated blind that has the legs straight up and it rocks pretty bad.
