I am flying to Mexico city from SLC on Saturday with Delta Airlines. I will be bringing two bows. Currently, they are in boxes from when they were shipped to me. Can I fly with them like that, or do I need to put them in plastic bow cases?

The Delta website is a bit vague on the subject... See photo

That is actually quite clear. You will need an archery specific, lockable, case. Whether you use a hard case, a soft case, or a hybrid style is up to you. A box is not "designed specifically for Archery".

I haven’t flown with a bow since 2021, so things could be different. When I did fly with Delta, American and Alaskan Airlines, I had my bow in a hard case with TSA approved locks. No issues as long as it’s under 50lbs and it should be a standard checked bag.

I just flew Delta to TAC and back with my bow in a Pelican Vault 730, and my friends was is his Bowtruk.

Super easy with no issues.

They didn’t even inspect either of them, just sent them through.

Another thing, if you use a hard case, every locking point needs to have a TSA lock. They are cheap on Amazon, and buy a couple extra because I’ve had a few break.
The first two times I went to South Africa I had all the locking points on my SKB with TSA locks. At the end of the trip I had only had 3 of the 6 left. The third time I went I only put 3 on and had no problems with TSA…..I really think they got fed up with opening too many. I do carry extras just in case though.

I place my bow in a hard case and also wrap it in hunting clothing until it reached 50 lbs. you can expect to pay more than u would expect. Some friends ship their bows via UPS but I’m not certain about Mexico.

Brother if you thought you could trust an airline enough to fly $1000+ equipment in a cardboard box, good on you

As others have said, put it in some kind of hard case and put a TSA approved padlock on it.

On a budget, get a plain Jane plano. if you can splurge a little, get a pelican Vault, Pelican Air 1745, or a SKB.
