Wow, that sucks man, glad you're alright. Stories like these always make me second guess buying used. Hopefully the shop hooks you up and doesn't try and put blame on you for improper usage or something stupid like that.

Hi all, Just wanted some advice.
Today, while shooting, the bow exploded on my third arrow. I pulled it back to full draw, and suddenly wile aiming the limbs snapped, sending debris flying while the arrow remained nocked and in the rest. The arrow also broke in the middle for some reason. The cams look un undamaged but the limb on one side snapped and split down the middle.

I’ve only shot 100 arrows or less out of this second hand bow I bought from a shop. It’s still within the warranty range of 3 months.

I’ve never dry fired the bow and never dropped it so I am at a loss to understand why this can happen.
How common is this ?
and what kind of thing can cause this to happen?

im also looking at getting a new bow now and thinking of getting either a BEAR ARCHERY COMPOUND BOW WHITETAIL MAXX RH OR. BEAR ARCHERY COMPOUND BOW ALASKAN XT RH

I’m relatively new to bow hunting what would you recommend?
Thanks in advance for all your responses

Previous owner dry fired the bow. The polymer limb pockets suffered internal cracking. That's what blew apart initially, causing all the rest. How do I know, watched it happen to a customer. He bought that exact model bow from another shop, brought it to us to set up. It had bent cams, so we asked when it was dry fired. He said he bought it brand new the day before from this other shop and hadn't even shot it. We told him to take it back. He did, and they swapped out the cams. He brought it back to us and we set it up. On his fourth or fifth arrow, the bow blew up just like yours. The bottom limb pocket gave out. Upon talking with Bowtech, they surmised that the pocket was cracked due to the previous dry fire.

yea, sounds like the bow might have had some hidden damage that no one saw,

This explanation "fits".... If I were a betting man, I'd wager that is exactly what happened.

A failure to that extent is really rare; agree with above that it probably experienced some abuse before it made it to your posession, probably even before the shop got it.

Be fair warned before going to the shop, there is a decent possibility they will blame user error [dry fire].
thats true, dont let that shop try to say you caused this to get out of the warrenty, some will try this and just offer you some kind of discount instead of full refund

Oof. Hope you’re okay! That’s gotta be scary. New bow shopping is fun and you’re doing it at the right time. I see you’re eyeballing Bears. They just dropped a bunch of new models. Enjoy shooting them and let us know what you go with! Sometimes It’s best to just buy new and get the warranty.

I've never personally had a bad experience with a used bow.... but some of the used bows that customers bring to me makes me believe there are more unscrupulous people out there than I thought....
Or when they derail yours right in front of you… 🤣😂 i can’t imagine the stuff you see being a dealer lol.

I have both the Whitetail Maxx and Alaskan XT. Both are great shooting bows, but I like the Alaskan XT better because it has a picatinny sight mount and a dovetail rest mount, whereas the Whitetail Maxx doesn't. HOWEVER, the new Whitetail INT model will be the same bow but with the integrated sight and rest mounting system.

Both bows shoot about 5 fps less than their rated speeds, so they're pretty fast.
