hey,
what does a V bar do different than a regualar stabilizer, and is it better for target?
thankx

Archery 101...

...V-bars are for those guys that "think" they need another gimick to take them to the "X" ring...

...and some of them do!!...they help the "balance" of the bow fore/aft or side to side...

...but when you take your bow and pack it in the case you have to take them off like a longer stabilizer...I don't mess with any of that stuff...and look where I am at in Archery!!...

...you keep on mowing the grass and doing your chores and maybe when you earn enough money you can buy some to try...or better yet...find someone who will let you use theirs to try on your bow...

...V-Bars are for BALANCE:) ...

will they help me stay steady, and will it be much different than the 26" stab i have now?
thankx

archery1, They MAY make you steadier or they may not. If you get a chance, try them and find out for yourself. It will add mass weight to your bow that could make it harder to hold steady. IMHO, don't spend your money on stuff like this yet. If you have money burning a hole in your pocket spend it on a good set of arrows.

do many pros use them, and how much do these go for?
i may want one, but i think i hold pretty steady on the target, but not sure if i can go steadier. i have 2 weights at the end of my stab, and if i add one more i start shaking. so based on this, could i still get one, or will it make me shake?
thankx

Go to the Merlin Website and click on Tech-Talk, then Stabilization and read what is said about V-Bars.
I have a set of AEP V-Bars but I admit, I ONLY bought them because I thought they were COOL looking.
They are currently laying in my parts drawyer!
To me, V-Bars are useless on all deflexed bows and most reflexed bows.
If you get the proper length stabilizer for a reflex bow, they don't need one either.
Some guys believe a single back weight on the offside is a good idea to offset the weight of your sight.
Although my Super Nova riser is tapped for a back weight, I haven't felt the need for one.
It's balance is fine without one for me.
Get some good arrows like Steve said or use the money for a target bag or quiver instead. ;)

what are deflex and reflex bows?

I also bought a set of v's years ago during the indoor season just because the guy that was beating me had them! I found that they just made my wallet lighter and my bow heavier, but had no effect on my scores. (my scores actually got worse because my bow was harder to hold steady due to the added weight!) Turns out that the guy was beating me because he spent more TIME ON THE RANGE than I did! Go figure!!
Moral of the story: Throwing money at the problem will never get you as close to your goal as will time spent ON THE RANGE. Now get up and go shoot.;)

Deflex/Reflex

Deflex=ends of the riser cant toward you as you hold it in the shooting position.
Reflex=ends of the riser cant away from you.
Deflex=Higher brace height, generally more forgiving bow as the arrow spends less time on the string.
Reflex=lower brace height. Higher speed due to longer power stroke. Generally more critical to shoot as the arrow spends more time on the string.

what are you talking about when they "CANT" toward you and away from you?
thankx

an olympic recurve bow is a classic deflexed riser. A mathews black max or a PSE baby g are two examples of radically reflexed risers.

I don't use Vbars on my olympic bows. I did when I shot the magnesium risers years ago. Several years ago, just about everyone but Butch Johnson, VIc Wunderle and Darrell Pace (he was probably the first good archer to discard them when the machined risers came out) used them. Now its about 50-50 in the recurve events I shoot in-you see less indoors than outdoors

they do eliminate the need for a bowstand on anything but muddy or wet ground:D

when it "CANTS", it means only the top limb moving?

Archery 101...

..."cant" is the same as "leaning" in a direction...

...when you "cant" your bow...you are leaning the bow one way or the other...either to the left or to the right...a "level" on your sight can help to prevent this from occuring...

...good shooting...

What v-bars do is allow you to knock the crap out of other peoples bows when putting your bow in the rack at indoor shoots.
I'm pretty sure someones v-bars met my arrow rest at our state shoot last year whick cost me x's right out of the gate until I figured out what happened.
I have not put my bow in the "comunity rack" since.

They look cool, but have little value on most modern equipment, IMO. Yes I have tried them.
