I finally scored on the last day of regular deer season here in PA.
I am hunting in a small patch of woods surrounded entirely by residential houses and the deer love it in there. They want to be there so bad they keep coming back in even after smelling me and seeing something in the tree.
I got in the stand about 1:00PM on Saturday and immediately deer started entering the woods from behind me and to my left. I watched the six doe and one button buck for thirty muntes until I tried to stand up and they caught my movement and ran up the hill behind me. They never leave the woods completely due to the fact that there is no where else to go. Fifteen minutes later deer start back down the hill so I grab my video camera and started filming. I shot video of a doe and the button buck for 30 more minutes until my hand was stiff. They finally trotted off back up the hill not wanted to pass my tree. At about 4:00 I could see movement at the top of the hill behind me again and to my left so I decided to stand up right away and turn around and face my tree. I noticed antlers about eighty yards away and he was just browsing from my left to right. He had one doe in tow and another coming toward him when I decided to give a hoot on the old grunt tube. I hit it soft and he gave me no reaction so I decided to increase the volumn and length of call. That started the curiousity that hooked him. He stared in my direction for a few minutes and I called again two long blows and two quick. He made his way toward me for another fifteen minutes and then made a left into my 18 yard range. I know this because I just marked the yardage after a doe was standing there earlier. I leaned back to put my tree in between him and I drew my bow. He took four more steps and I let the Slick Trick tipped Easton fly from my Bowtech Liberty. It hit him high above the vitals, but the I knew the exit was good. He ran another 20 yards and collapsed. I could see his legs kicking, but he never got up.
BTW the little guy is my 2 1/2 year old future hunter, Ian. I don't know who was more excited that day him or I...?
