What were you using the tire shred in and how deep? I'm not doubting what you are telling me, but it seems like tire shred by its density and weight would be harder to penetrate. The main reason the rubber appeals to me is that I can get lots of it for $5 for a 40lb bag at any of the big box stores. Clothes or rags would take a while for me to accumulate.

I filled a gunny sack as tight as I could. Even tried the sack they came in. Getting them packed enough is a problem.
