It's crazy to me how different those deer are then up here in the valley, yet supposedly they are the same genetically .

I've always thought the same. The California blacktail seem much closer to mule deer.

Then there's the "bench deer" you can find in parts of the cascades that are a mule/blacktail hybrid.
