I went to my hunting club last night to do alittle pre-season scouting. As I was pulling in to park I saw a nice deer - probably 2 1/2 years old. It looked like a nice 8 pt - not wide, but pretty high. As the deer turned to watch me pull in, it turned out to have 4 pts on the left side and a spike on the right.
What would cause this to happen? Bad genetics or injury? Should I take this deer or should I wait and see what it looks like next year?

It probably has to do with genetics and a little of what it ate. I wouldn't shoot it. MY area I occasionally see 1.5 yr olds like that. But have never seen any of our older deer keep the trait.
