Aae max not sticking well

1460 Views 69 Replies 38 Participants Last post by  raisins
Hello all! I have aae max vanes which I like and have been prepping with the aae pen then using flex fletch zing glue the black red and yellow color one. I have taken the time to prep and then let them sit for a min to dry. They are just peeling off the wraps pretty easy at times. Maybe I’m doing something wrong just hoping someone can help before I finish building alot more

Try using more glue.

Not being a jackass. If you've done the prep then air bubbles would be my first guess.
Are you wiping the wraps first? I clean them with isopropyl alcohol. Also, is the glue old?

The wraps are relative when it touch anything alchole on it then smear

I had the same problem. The vanes are primed you should not need to clean or use the pin. I fletched a dozen and spun one and the vanes flew off. I checked the rest and the vanes come off them too. The glue stuck to the shaft but not the vane. I am trying goriall glue dries in ten seconds. It's the bottle with the brush and application tip. So far so good, I really like the brush.
Use the AAE primer pen and AAE Max Bond glue. Never had an issue with this combination on wraps

Wipe the wrap with the AAE wipes which won’t damage your wraps.
my wrap would pull off the arrow before the fletch would the wrap.

I never prep the shafts or the wraps - just use el cheapo super glue...my AAE Max Hunters never come off unless I pull them off with pliers.
I noticed that the vanes didn’t bond as well if I waited a while between using a primer pen and then gluing them on. I noticed this when I tried to prep a bunch of vanes with the pen all at once then try to glue them on. Now I use the pen, wait a couple seconds, then apply the glue and stick it on. I have used Loc Tite and Bob Smiths and they both work with this method on my Max Stealths.

I use a primer pin on all vanes now. I swipe it with the pin and as soon as the shine from the acetone goes away I apply the glue and get it on the arrow.

You can't prep a bunch ahead, it needs to be done with the vane in the clamp and with the arrow ready to go.

I also use the AAE glue and compress the clamped van to the arrow for about 40 seconds then remove the clamp and go to the next one. There is kind of a sweet spot on the amount of glue to use. You want enough for full coverage but not an excess amount. On an AAE Max Stealth I put 5 or 6 evenly spaced dots of glue on the vane then use the nozzle to spread it to get full coverage. If your jig is set up properly you will see all of the air between the shaft and the vane disappear when you apply pressure. I have gotten the most consistently good results this way. It takes a little longer, but not as long as having to pull one back off, clean the arrow again, and redo.

I wipe the shafts down with 91% alcohol before hand. If it is a refletch, I lightly sand the arrow after scraping all the glue off before wiping with alcohol.

Wipe your arrow wrap with acetone, then use a q tip with acetone to prep the vane base, then use loctite super gel control for glue. They stick extremely well doing that. Also, buy 100% acetone, not nail polish remover because I've seen some people use that and although it has acetone in it it also has other additives and isn't as potent.

I have had issues like all the others, and my I have come up with my own process to ensure 100% adherence. The process is lengthy, but is absolutely works. Below are the steps that I take,

1) I stopped using wraps
2) emery cloth to slightly rough up the fletching area
3) acetone to clean the arrow
4) acetone on q tip to clean the fletch
5) Primer pen on fletch
6) make sure arrow and fletch are dry
7) aae max bond glue
8) 1 drop at front and back of fletch once fletch is in place.

Get the full kit they sell for the AAE max stealth (wipes, primer pen, specific glue) and then follow the instructions exactly. I have several dozen arrows done like this and the vanes are all stuck on there extremely well. You can't short circuit their process while using their vanes and expect good results. Sometimes you can do this in other areas, but not in this case.
I know this sounds strange but immediately before you are ready to apply the fletching apply a hair blow dryer on high heat to the shaft.
For some reason it solved the issue of AAE vanes not sticking for me. I think it may be due to the high humidity area I reside in.

Good luck, hope it resolves your issues.
Any time I see a thread about max vane adhesion issues, I know before I even open it that the OP didn’t follow the directions…

If you want to use max vanes, follow the instructions exactly. Otherwise, prepare to have adhesion problems. It’s not a matter of if, but when and how bad will they be.

Use the aae stuff, and do exactly what it says and you’ll have no issues.

i stored my full kit in 2 zip lock bags, which made it last a little longer

i'm wondering if the fridge or freezer might be the best place for longer term storage

i love my max stealth vanes, but it is a pain to worry that your arrow wipes/etc haven't dried out (my last kit lasted about 1 year)
If people would just follow directions.......
