I'd like to know what 3 year old can pull a Bow back and keep it steady enough to even think about using a release! Please post a pic. This I gotta see.

Kids Release

I would wait 4 or 5 years. I dont know about your son, but with my boys, patience is iffy at best. Its very flattering when our boys want to be just like us, but I would hate to see the lad get overwhelmed and quit because of it.

I have a boy that will be 8 in a month, and he just HAD to have a sight for his bow. He wants to be like the ole' man and his brother. But he doesnt have the ability to actually use it, because he wont settle down. It takes a great deal of coordinated effort to use all of the stuff we've got.

The main thing is to keep the fun in shooting, which ever way you go.

I am very greatful for having come from the age of FINGERS ONLY shooting and recurves for that matter! I think it teaches you alot about hand eye coordintion, and dicipline!
I agree with Dodgedude on this one. They have their whole life ahead of them with compounds and new technology! These future archers won't have many reason to pick up a traditional bow besides a novelty idea.
Keep it simple! Let them remember the traditional methods as great memories. The same as most of us have.
Great to see them start so young!
PS would love to see a picture of that 3 yr old!

I agree with the fingers only. If a child that young shoots a release, THEY WILL PUNCH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This will engrain a habit that will be nearly impossible to break down the line.

too young

Good post, I have two grandsons that are 4&5. I have been contemplating on their first bow and have not made up my mind about compound or trad. But whatever it is I am going to start them out with fingers. I started archery at a late age of 47 and learned on a compound and even though I do quite well I can't shoot fingers worth a flip or shoot a trad bow. I just recently won a custom built longbow and am looking forward to learning how to shoot it. So having said that I want my grandsons to be able to shoot with fingers first.
