OK, what is it and why?

I am going to say bobcat. Because of tail. Although I have never seen a bobcat or lion in the wild and could be mistaken.

The photo is fuzzy and hers what I think. At first glance I would have said Bobcat But is does not look like the Bobcats I have seen(no stripes) but it has a short tail like a Bobcat would. Given the coloration of the photo and size of the head and neck(even though it has a short tail) I would say a young Mountain Lion.

A little bigger than that, Doc. No spots, and the color was more of a reddish light brown. Maybe 10-15 pounds. Still looked different than the OP's pic.

It is a Bobcat.

At least no one is saying Lynx.

If you are confused between the 2 species, time to hit the library.

Bobcats have different colorations. The Bobcat in that photo is just more solid in color but has some striping on his belly. He's got Bobcat tail and ears. Bobcat for certain.

I've looked at a few Bobcats up close.

There is no way that's a cougar...body is too short...white hair on face...bobbed tail...coloration on belly.
