Me and my 2 hunting buddies are starting to do our research for a bull elk rifle hunt. Can anyone suggest a good outfitter for this hunt?

We are looking to hunt in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, or New Mexico. Our budget for the hunt is in the $5,000-$6,500 range.

All info is appreciated!!!

Elk hunt

Where do you want to hunt is the first thing you need to decide and then go from there. There are tons of good outfitters and lots of bad ones. Figure out what area you want to hunt and then see if there is someone from the area that you want to hunt that can recommend an outfitter with references to contact about previous hunts and experiences. All else fails be your own.

Best of luck,

I will be able to either recommend/not recommend a N.M. outfitter after my hunt in Sept. I'll let you know how it goes...

For $5500 - $6000 I wouldnt waste my time with Colorado. I am no expert, but I can read, and the trophy potential in the OTC areas compared to New Mexico just arent comparable. For that kind of money, yo should be able to get into quite the elk. Good luck no matter what you choose. BTW, I am going to MT for my archery elk hunt in Sept. I will certainly let you know what I find there. Shoot straight.

Nm!!

There is an outfitter we have been looking into that has private ranches in NM and there is no draw for you license. $6,000 for a 5 day 1x1 hunt.

Going to dig into this one - calling him direct and then all the references I can!!

Thanks guys!!

Colorado

I think you can certainly find an outfitter on private land in Colorado that could put you on big bulls. You might look into places that the Primos team have hunted.

If you would not mind saving money, you could book a hunt in southern Colorado with Cory Veach of Southwestern adventures. He hunts private property, his bulls are average, his kill rate is around 90% or better for rifle and his price is around 4k. Let me know if you want any further information. I bowhunted with them and was into elk every day.

Personally I think people like Elite, USO and NM Pro Big Game outfitters play the numbers game... They run ALOT of hunters thru camp and they get a few glory shots that you see everywhere.. There are alot better smaller outfitters out there. Again just my opinion.

Elk Hunt

This will be our very first elk hunt. I am looking to harvest a good representative bull. Sure I'd like to kill a monster, but if I could get a shot at a 280-300" bull, I'd be very happy!!!

I appreciate all the help and suggestions from you guys - Thanks!!! :darkbeer:

Keep them coming!!

Open Creek Outfitters

Look at Open Creek Outfitters in Cody, WY. Very good operation, but I am a little biased, Jay, the owner is my brother. He runs wilderness pack-in rifle hunts SE of Yellowstone from September through October. He takes many good bulls each year. If you can shoot and are physically in shape you will get a very nice bull. Opencreekoutfitters.net

J and J Outfitters

J and J Outfitters in Hennifer Utah. They have some great properties around the state and are great to work with. Seems like they advertise in Trophy Hunter.

We, Slunger Hollow Productions, edit a TV show for Steve West called Steve's Outdoor Adventures and Steve is a booking agent. If you want to get ahold of him he could find you what you are looking for and from what I have seen he takes great care of his clients. His web site is www.steveshunts.com. I hope this helps. My partner, John Blesedell, is going on an archery Elk hunt with Steve in Sept.

Yea, as I posted earlier, I've hunted with Elite and NM Prfesional Big Game Hunting both are good. At Elite you hunt in south east NM and the terain is very rough, all canyons, with NM pro. big game it's in the Gila and not as rough. I never saw another hunter with either outfit. Killed a 330 bull with Elite and saw alot of good bulls with NM.P.BG. outfitters but never got a shot on one, got close but it just didn't happen. They are both in an area with real good bulls and they know what their doing. Call some of their refferences and talk to them, I bet I called 75 people when I was looking and never heard a bad thing about either place. The reason I didn't go back to Elite was the terrain, it is some kind of steep, rough country and we were walking, climbing up to about 11.500 ft. (wilderness)...good luck
