I feel like these TAC events have become the new best thing (no I have not been) but see so many videos and how many events are popping up more and more! Locally 3D never has been huge, although popular and honestly very expensive to likely not fit the needs of your average or even above average archery bow hunters? Or am I wrong? I like 3D and made me a solid shooter I just don't enjoy the way it is as much anymore and considering starting to plan my years of shooting more toward TAC events as it look more than just a shoot but a damn good time with friends and family and accommodates all! Not saying ASA or IBO is dying but the TAC events appear to be blow those numbers away? Thoughts and experiences on these? Additionally how do you guys look up which events and time it out and get tickets and so on as I hear they sell out! Thanks!

It seems TAC has a lot of long walks up hills and long shots. If that is correct, it seems targeted at elk hunters.
From what I have seen for western states yes as that is the hunting atmosphere... But I see in midwest or eastern and they look pretty normal. But all our 3D shoots here are 4 - 6 miles for 15 - 20 targets when said and done.

Thanks, my exposure to TAC is only youtube and it seems all the videos and pics are from western states.

I was hoping to attend TAC in Tennessee this year, but had some stuff come up last minute and I had to cancel, but from what I've seen it is mainly meant to be fun and challenging, but not have much emphasis on actual score. Sanctioned 3D events, on the other hand, put more emphasis on scoring/ranking. Still fun, but they don't have the crazy uphill/downhill/sidehill shots or targets obstructed like you'll see at TAC.

Apples to oranges. TAC is for fun and ASA is for competition. Can shoot ASA for fun but it’s geared towards competing and improving. Most people that shoot TAC have the goal of finishing. I’ve only scored one round at TAC over the years just to see how I could do.

I don’t shoot TAC anymore as registration is a major pain. If you are willing to do that they are fun. Local 3D can be for fun too. It’s just more fun when shooting a hunting bow at longer distances.

TAC is no stress and pure fun. It caters to almost everyone, no limitations on equipment, speeds, it's just an awesome event anyone and everyone can go shoot. Your local 3d or national size tournaments are not usually a "fun" thing and is more serious and caters to the target archer more. It's not taking place of, just another event that is totally different.

Just a lot of fun, challenging shots, uneven terrain, walking (exercise...omg!!!) Just good cameraderie and no pressure. Lots of manufacturers to visit with. Family and kid(and pet) friendly. Just a great time. I saw guys with bowhunting rigs all the way to full on target rigs. Keep score or not, no prizes, except novelty shoots. It's a great thing for archery and I can see how It would trickle over to ASA or IBO for those that it sparks a competitive streak. We had a blast in Broken Bow and are going to the SD event. I live in OK and my parents live in Sturgis SD, not far from Terry Peak. Don't know if I would drive that far for one if I didn't have another reason for going, but they are really really fun. Have already met a bunch of great folks practicing for it locally and shooting it as well.

I see the increased visibility of TAC as a good thing for the 3D archery world as a whole. Here in SC, even though we haven't had any TAC events close to us, I've seen an increase in other 3D events in and around my area as a direct correlation to TAC. Even those that haven't shot a TAC event talk about it at local 3D events.

That's not entirely true. The San Antonio event was as flat as they get. Granted, it was a "long walk" with some "long shots" but the length of the walk and the distance of the shot vary depending on which course you choose to shoot. The first TAC event i ever shot was in Park City. We shot two courses over the two days we were there. One was the "Leupold Course." Other than the fact that the setting was in the mountains of Utah, that particular course was laid out very similar to 3D events I've shot here in the east. Shot distances ranged from 30 yards to 60 yards. Some shots were in thick wooded areas and some were on field edges but it very much had a whitetail hunting feel to it. The TAc events here in the eastern part of the country (TN, PA specifically, since they're the only other TAC events I've shot) are very "whitetail hunting oriented," in my opinion.

The biggest takeaway from TAC for me... It was an incredibly fun experience that challenged me as an archer and I was able to show myself that I was far more capable of doing things with a bow than I ever thought I was. Before TAC, I had never taken a shot over 50 yards (backyard practicing) but TAC showed me I was capable of much more. Now, I rarely practice closer than 40 yards and out 60 yards. None of my hunting spots offer a shot over 35 yards and practicing at those longer ranges makes the shorter, more realistic hunting shots, seem much easier to execute.

I don't see TAC as anything but having a positive impact on the archery community as a whole.

Very true statement. They have scorecards for those that want to make it a competition within their group but you're right, score is irrelevant at TAC. Over the various TAC events I've shot over the last few years, I never spoke with one person that kept score.

TAC is a giant party and a big event as well as a 3D shoot. It's not just a club 3D event and it may actually take away from some local 3D because people spend so much money to go to them that it is a full blown vacation. Like others have said it is purely a fun shoot.

My personal favorite similar shoot is the NorthWest Mountain Challenge which is a very similar course setup with a lot of hiking, long shots, ride the ski lift, etc. but they have a fun portion of the shoot or you can shoot it for competition/money/awards as well. They basically run 2 shoots at the one event. All the fun shooters shoot 3 of the 4 courses each day, and the competition guys shoot 1 course on Saturday, which is the extreme long distance long hike course, and then a different course on Sunday which is a shorter course scoring painted 12 and 14 rings. So you get 2 different styles of competition with awards for each day. They do an overall awards of the 3 shoots as well so if you shoot all 3 you essentially have 7 awards you are competing for. 2 at each shoot and 1 overall. It's really a fantastic series and I actually prefer it over the TAC events and I have shot both. But I have a competitive side to me as well so I enjoy shooting the competition side of the event.

3D events are very different than TAC. It's apples and oranges.

TAC is better positioned to grow the sport IMO. There's no competition unless you make it one within your group, you don't keep score unless you want to, you take shots that are sometimes extreme and downright ridiculous for the novelty of it. It's an excuse to get together with friends and/or like minded folks to enjoy the experience, to challenge yourself, to figure out what you're actually capable of, and to have a reason to prepare your equipment and practice.

We shot 4 courses at Broken bow and kept score on 1 as we shot with a bunch of guys we know and they like the bragging rights thing. That said I was in first until the last couple of targets and had a couple of bad shots...lol.
This summed it up well for me. Shooting 3d with friends (many that are better archers than I) has really added to my love of archery. Bragging rights, seeing improvements to my form, and better scores are great, but the friendships formed and the laughs are priceless to me.

That is like Sunrise shoot in AZ very similar and the way I enjoy it so everyone has a spot or option! That sounds like a sweet shoot!

Pretty much where I am at now. I have won fair amount of shoots but the BSing and just messing around seams to be a more memorable thing to me than the buckles and sweaters I have won. Still fun just not a priority for me anymore.

Never shot at neither one but the Mountain Archery Fest looks like it would be fun too. Love to go to a TAC or a Mountain Archery Fest someday if I had the time and extra cash!

However as long as I have a range near me I'll put my time and money in it because I can always shoot there when I'm poor. Not so with those big events unless one comes close by.

Never been to TAC- however in AZ they do the hike to hunt. Put in some good miles and some great challenging shots that will make or break you, if not will for sure break your arrow. Best time I have had with friends and even made some new friends that I still shoot with.
First time I shot in an actual downpour and the amount of trash talk is great. Its not cheap by any means as you can go thru arrows quick so do not go into it doing cost analysis.
Just go into it thinking that I have a bow, friends, and a backpack full of trash talk and comebacks.
