Arrow knock tightness

How tight is too tight for a knock? Mine click on the string nicely, but can it effect the speed/flight of the arrow?

Nocks that are to tight can definitely have a negative impact on arrow flight and noise. The usual test is to nock an arrow and let it hang from the string vertically. A slight tap on the string with a couple fingers should dislodge the nock and let the arrow fall.

The problem is defining what exactly is a "slight" tap.

another test is if the arrow nock doesn't grab the string. hold the bow horizontal and nock the arrow so it points at the ground then rotate the bow front to back, if the arrow stays pointing straight down at the ground the nocks should be ok.

i've done the tap test and have had to do a good thump on the string to get the arrow to come off especially with brand new serving. but if the arrow nock didn't grab onto the string i didn't have any issues.

Depends.

If the bow is tuned correctly, the nock tightness has less effect than most people think when shooting at trad distances.
Now, that takes a little qualification. If the nock is so loose to allow frequent dry fires (due to the nock slipping off the string prematurely) or so tight that it takes one person to hold the bow and two others to push the nock on the string - all bets are off.

About the tuning part: If the bow is tuned correctly, the nock will leave the string as the string approaches centerline. (The paradox of the arrow causes a lateral deflection of the string.) In that case, a tight nock should be no louder than a looser one. If the bow isn't tuned, the tighter the nock, the more of a "plucking" sound is possible. That's a theory and YMMV.

For a target rig, I like a light snap and little to no slippage on the string. For a hunting rig, I generally go a bit tighter for "safety" since the conditions are less controlled.

I've often wondered about this exact thing and when the light tap worked I felt a bit uneasy in field and hunting situations. This explanation Viper gives me a ton of peace of mind as I like the nock to hold a bit tighter when hunting but was concerned that the slight extra tightness might affect my accuracy.
