I need something to help me pull arrows from Foam targets. I would like to have something that will grip the arrow so that I can twist the arrow to help with the pulling. Soap helps with the pulling but lately after pulling a few arrows it is time for me to go to the house. It is bad when it takes more effort to pull the arrow than it takes to pull the bow. Thanks for any suggestions.

I was looking at the cabelas web site and they have a arrow puller for you that grip's the arrow and also comes with a lube tube which you slide your arrow in before you shoot and that helps so that the arrow does not stick to the foam. It work's great, I was gonna post a pick for you but I could not find the puller pick again to post it. Check out their site and you will find it and it was actually very cheap.

Sounds like you're using one of those target cubes.... I got so disgusted with mine that I ripped it apart and salvaged the individual sheets. Now, I use 6 hay bales with the foam sheets (each about 1/2" thick) as individual targets. I am much happier this way!

It really just doesn't make any sense to have to put so much effort into extracting an arrow. Being able to twist the arrow will help (providing you aren't using broadheads) and after mabey 20,000 shots things will get more reasonable but still . . . .

Right now I use the GKF arrow puller and it's fine. For the same price there is the gorilla grip puller that I think is a little nicer, both are only about 10$ cdn. The nicest one I have seen is the berry puller. It's simply amazing how it grips the arrow. Around 13$ american and is well worth the investment.

Thanks for the help. Now I have some places to look. I am shooting the old mckensey targets and it is almost like putting super glue on the arrow and shooting. Some of the new 3d targets are easy to pull but our club has not replaced targets in several years. It also appears that the older the foam gets the tougher it is to pull an arrow.

The problem is most prevalent if your arrow has a shiny finish on it. The glossy finish causes quite a bit of heat buildup as the arrow enters the target and actually melts the foam to the arrow shaft. As you have found out this makes extraction a real bear.

I use one of the el cheapo arrow pullers like this

The secret is to twist the shaft in the target before you attempt to pull it straight out. This normally breaks the adhesion of the foam to the shaft and allows easy extraction. McKenzie targets as well as Block targets are notroiously bad for this.

True

I was told to NEVER twist carbon arrows, just aluminum, is this still true or is it left over from the wrapped carbon days.

I believe this is true.I use the Berry puller and it works great. I also use IVORY bar soap on the shaft it works well also. You must use IVORY though other soap dosent work well for some reason.
jim p----What arrow are you using? My youngest son had some GoldTips and they were like you glued them in the target.

I'm curious what arrow as well, I shoot Beman ICS Camo Hunters and them dang things are like pulling concrete coated nails out of oak. One time I had to lay the target on its side and stand on it to use my leg muscles to pull the dang thing out, using a puller.

I am using goldtip hunter pro's 5570. If anyone can show me a picture of the berry puller or tell me where I can purchase one I would appreciate it. Sometimes I wish that I had a puller similiar to a wine cork puller. I pulled so hard one day that I got a muscle cramp and could hardly shoot for a week. I wish our club would replace the mckensey targets with rhinehart targets as the old targets have to be replaced but once a routine starts it is hard to break.

I use the yellow back end of one of those yellow & blue kitchen gloves. Just cut off the yellow part, and you have a puller that is very maneuverable, compact, and will pull out any arrow out of any butt. If you need to twist the arrow, you can also wrap the gripper around the arrow until it is tight, then grab a hold and twist. Works like a charm!
